To expand the reach of the internet to make it more affordable, the ministry is looking for every possible solution and option including building partnerships and collaborating with third parties.

The main focus of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics is currently providing affordable access to communication which is the key to Indonesia’s future economic development. Currently, the Indonesian economy is supported by 60% of SMEs, affordability and connectivity access to expand connectivity coverage is the key to sustaining and developing the Indonesian economy further.

Fast growth in the Internet-using population has powered Indonesia to be one of the fastest-growing digital economies in South East Asia. Adults with Internet access increased more than three-fold from 13 in 2011 to 51% in 2019. 49% of Indonesian adults are still not connected to the Internet and a significant digital divide persists across various spatial, economic, and social dimensions. Indonesians in the top 10% of the income distribution are 5 times more likely to be connected to the internet than those in the lowest 10%.

Indonesians who are connected to the internet use it quite intensively, with communication, social media and leisure applications dominating usage. On average, Indonesians spend around 6 hours online, with younger and more educated groups more digitally engaged.

As reported by OpenGov Asia, digital technology has the potential to create new jobs for 20-45 million workers in Indonesia, according to the Indonesian National Development Planning Minister and Head of the National Planning and Development Agency (Bappenas) Suharso Monoarfa. Addressing the Statistical Society Forum, Monoarfa said Indonesia has experienced digitalisation which is projected to create new types of jobs for 20-45 million vacancies.

While Indonesia has one of the fastest-growing digital economies in South East Asia, action is needed to ensure that all Indonesians, especially the most vulnerable, can access various digital technologies and services and realise the benefits. Although the accelerated adoption of internet-enabled services during the pandemic is likely to boost the growth of the digital economy, the benefits of such development could be unequal.
