NTU Singapore Offers Work-Study Degree in Computing

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), is pioneering a new SkillsFuture Work-Study Degree Programme in Computing, set to commence in August 2024. This unique part-time offering is the first in the country and aims to cater the working professionals seeking to transition into the information and communication technology (ICT) sector or enhance their existing skills.

Developed in collaboration with industry leaders from the ICT sector, the programme distinguishes itself through its stackable design. This feature empowers students to study at their own pace, with minimal disruption to their work commitments. To earn a full Bachelor of Technology in Computing, students must complete modules under three distinct stacks: the Foundation, the Specialist, and the Industry Immersion.

What sets this programme apart is its unique approach to recognising student achievements along the way. Upon completing modules in the first two stacks, students will receive Professional Certificates that validate their newly acquired competencies. These certificates can serve as stepping stones for career advancement or job role transitions while students continue their educational journey.

The formal partnership between NTU and industry giants was cemented during an event focusing on Internet of Things (IoT) security. Dr Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Communications and Information and the Ministry of Health graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

NTU’s Deputy President and Provost, Prof Ling San, emphasised the programme’s alignment with the institution’s strategic plan, NTU2025. This five-year plan aims to equip NTU students with the skills and knowledge essential for success in an ever-evolving work and living environment. Additionally, it seeks to position NTU as a leading provider of continuing education.

The introduction of the part-time Work-Study Degree Programme in Computing comes at a time when the ICT sector is experiencing substantial growth and an escalating demand for skilled professionals in areas such as software engineering, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity. Students enrolling in this groundbreaking programme will be well-positioned to seize the numerous career opportunities within this dynamic sector.

NTU’s commitment to offering innovative and flexible educational opportunities demonstrates its dedication to addressing the evolving needs of its students and preparing them for success in a rapidly changing professional landscape. With the support of industry leaders, this programme promises to be a milestone in the realm of continuing education, empowering professionals to thrive in the digital age.

Offering computing degrees is instrumental in cultivating a pool of skilled talent that will serve as the linchpin for implementing and sustaining digital initiatives, making them vital contributors to the ongoing transformation.

Universities work closely with the industry to design programs that align with the current needs of the sector. This alignment ensures that graduates are well-prepared to make significant contributions to Singapore’s digital transformation, bridging the gap between academia and real-world demands.

The interdisciplinary nature of computing programs further enhances their value. These programs often incorporate components that enable students to acquire knowledge in fields beyond computing, such as business, healthcare, or engineering. This versatility equips graduates with a diverse skill set, which is highly valuable in addressing a wide array of complex digital challenges and providing holistic solutions.

Singapore’s global competitiveness is of paramount importance in the dynamic global digital economy. To remain competitive on the international stage, the country needs a highly skilled workforce capable of harnessing the latest technologies. Computing degrees play an essential role in empowering Singaporeans to not only adapt but also excel globally, ensuring the nation’s prominence in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
