Continuous3D: Innovation in Advanced Manufacturing

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In the realm of advanced manufacturing and robotics, Continuous3D has emerged as a beacon of innovation, transforming from a lab-based efficiency project into a promising commercial enterprise under the stewardship of Dr Peter King. Six years ago, Dr King, a dedicated manufacturing researcher at CSIRO’s Clayton’s site, identified a pervasive challenge hindering lab productivity – excessive time spent on programming robotic tasks before each project commencement.

“Before Continuous3D, our workflow was significantly hampered by the need for repetitive programming,” recalls Dr King, reflecting on the inception of the technology.

Initially conceived as a strategic solution to streamline internal operations, Continuous3D has since evolved into a dynamic entrepreneurial venture. Its core innovation lies in empowering robots to operate autonomously in unstructured environments, such as conducting intricate repairs on machinery, a feat traditionally requiring extensive human intervention.

“Robots typically require meticulous programming to perform tasks accurately. Our breakthrough equips them with cognitive capabilities, essentially providing them with ‘brains’,” explains Dr King, emphasising the technology’s transformative potential in enhancing workplace efficiency and safety.

Beyond the confines of their laboratory, Dr King and his team recognised the widespread applicability of their innovation across diverse industries. To validate its market viability, Continuous3D engaged in rigorous industry trials and demonstrations, laying the groundwork for its commercialisation journey.

Central to their success was their participation in the ON Accelerate programme, a pivotal initiative designed to bridge the gap between research innovation and market readiness. Through ON Prime, Continuous3D conducted extensive market research and customer validation exercises, affirming the widespread demand for their technology.

“Our participation in ON Prime was instrumental in refining our understanding of market needs and fine-tuning our business strategy,” notes Dr King, underscoring the programme’s role in shaping Continuous3D’s commercial trajectory.

Building on their initial insights, the team transitioned to ON Accelerate, focusing on honing their entrepreneurial acumen and preparing their technology for investor engagement. The programme provided invaluable resources, including online learning modules, personalised coaching, and networking opportunities, essential for scaling their venture.

“ON Accelerate afforded us the dedicated time and resources to focus on refining our business model and connecting with industry leaders and potential investors,” shares Dr King, reflecting on the programme’s transformative impact.

Amidst workshops and mentorship sessions, Continuous3D solidified its market positioning and enhanced its operational efficiency, paving the way for future growth and expansion. The programme’s emphasis on fostering entrepreneurial skills and facilitating industry connections proved instrumental in propelling Continuous3D towards commercial success.

Looking ahead, Dr King and his team are poised to capitalise on their technological breakthrough, positioning Continuous3D as a frontrunner in the realm of robotic maintenance solutions. With a firm foundation laid through strategic partnerships and market validation, Continuous3D stands ready to revolutionise global industries, offering unparalleled efficiency and innovation in robotic operations.

As they navigate the path from lab innovation to market disruption, Continuous3D exemplifies the transformative potential of academic research translated into real-world impact, promising a future where advanced robotics redefine productivity and safety standards across diverse sectors.

CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, continues to champion innovation. Its “Innovate to Grow” programme designed to empower Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in advanced manufacturing has already supported over 500 SMEs, providing crucial resources to advance their research initiatives.

Recently bolstered by an AU$20 million investment, CSIRO aims to expand this initiative, extending support to an additional 600 SMEs initially focused on advanced manufacturing. This substantial funding underscores CSIRO’s commitment to enhancing SME productivity and sustainability through increased access to research and development opportunities.

By fostering collaboration between industry and academia, CSIRO’s initiatives, including Innovate to Grow and other tailored programmes, empower SMEs across diverse sectors to integrate cutting-edge innovations, driving economic growth and technological advancement nationwide.
