Series of workshops to boost Philippine start-up ecosystem

A series of introductory workshops on start-up entrepreneurship has kicked off in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, according to a recent announcement.

It was the first in a series of seven workshops, which will go on to Mati City, Tagbilaran City, Clark, Baguio City, Iloilo City, and Cagayan de Oro City.

DICT STARTUP BASIQS is a workshop designed to grow the start-up ecosystem of the Philippines by encouraging budding ‘technopreneurs’ to realise their ideas through experiential learning and skills building.

The workshop is an initiative by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the QBO Innovation Hub (QBO).

The Department is taking on the challenge of providing the start-ups with the support they need in order to build their digital start-ups.

Hopefully, the start-ups located in the areas where the workshops will be held will take the opportunity to learn the basics of technopreneurship, especially since the workshops are free and open to the public.

Participants can look forward to learning about the start-up mindset, tech entrepreneurship and tools such as lean start-up and business model canvas. These learning can be added to their toolkit.

The partnership between the Department and QBO was made formal through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA).

Both have been long-time partners in their efforts to establish a strong Philippine Start-up Ecosystem.

QBO is the country’s first public-private partnership dedicated to develop the Philippine start-up ecosystem by supporting innovation, technology development, and entrepreneurship.

The workshops are aligned with its vision to inspire the spirit of entrepreneurship across the country and provide Filipinos with the basic knowledge on how to start a start-up.

They want to see more Filipino start-ups succeed and believe that through more dynamic collaborations, such as this program with DICT, with government to promote the innovation mindset in the countryside, this vision can be realised in the near future.

The DICT STARTUP BASIQS workshops are a component of the seedPH Program, which aims to strengthen the development of communities in the countryside crucial to spreading the start-up advocacy in the country.

Start-up support is critical as digital transformation is one of the criteria in the Tholons Services Globalisation Index (TSGI) to rank Super Cities.

The workshops also support the Philippine Roadmap for Digital Start-up initiative of conducting grassroots activities that encourage holding quality value-generating events.

The DICT is the primary policy, planning, coordinating, implementing, and administrative entity of the Executive Branch of the government that plans, develops, and promotes the national ICT development agenda.

QBO Innovation Hub is a platform for the startup community to collaborate, develop talent, and grow.

It is the country’s first public-private initiative for start-ups, created through a partnership among IdeaSpace, J.P. Morgan, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
