New website to provide guidance to Australian space start-ups

The lawyers from the University of Adelaide will be sharing their expert guidance on the Australian and international laws that regulate the activities of the space industry.

According to a recent report, the Australian Navigational Guide Explaining Laws for Space (ANGELS) website will be created in a project of the same name.

The Law Foundation of South Australia has financed the joint project of the University’s Adelaide Law School and the International Aerospace Law and Policy Group (IALPG) law firm with nearly A$ 100,000.

Experts from both organisations will comprise the board that will oversee the project. Their expertise includes domestic and international space law as well as aviation law.

The information that will be provided on the ANGELS website will give guidance to space start-ups located in the state South Australia as well as throughout Australia.

This will guide them so that they can to conduct their business in accordance with Australian, foreign and applicable international law.

The ANGELS project and website will aim to provide an easy step-by-step online guide on what legal and regulatory requirements need to be satisfied to conduct space activities lawfully and commercially.

Moreover, it will draw space entrepreneurs to South Australia and encourage the growth of the space industry in the state.

Plus, it will help guarantee sustainable use of space for the current, the next and the future generations.

Work on the website will begin in early 2019 as students at the Adelaide Law School will start developing the content for the website.

Later in 2019, at around September, the website will go live when the new Australian legislation, the Space Activities (Launches and Returns) Act 2018 comes into effect.

The ANGELS project will work closely with the South Australian Space Industry Centre.

Six Australian cities will also be visited in order to meet with space start-ups to understand their regulatory needs.

The complex legal issues that are associated with space activities will be handled by the lawyers from IALPG, since they are Australia’s air and space law firm capable of providing legal and policy advice solutions.

The project consolidates and confirms the important contribution that Adelaide Law School and South Australia make to the Australian and global space industry.

Adelaide Law School has become a global hub for space law education and research.

This is evidenced with them being one of the founders and leaders of the Woomera Manual project, which will be the definitive document on military and security law as it applies to space.

The Woomera Manual project will be completed by 2020 and will draw on the knowledge of dozens of legal and space operations experts from around the world.
