Singapore’s newest and largest data centre facility

The number of data centres popping up in Singapore have not been few. In August, search engine giant Google announced it will add its third data centre on the island. A month later, Zuckerberg’s Facebook shared plans to build its first data centre in Singapore. Its first in Asia.

This month, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) just unveiled plans to erect a new data centre in Singapore, at STT Loyang. The largest in the Republic, this will also be the company’s seventh data centre in Singapore.

A state-of-the-art facility, the data centre leverages on the company’s global footprint and local expertise to boost Singapore’s reputation in the Southeast Asia as a data centre hub. Moreover, the data centre will cater to a real need in the region – a growing cloud market.

STT Loyang is reported to have an IT load capacity of over 30MW. Adding to this impressive feat, is the sustainability of the data centre. The hyperscale data centre is designed to meet the highest sustainability benchmark of BCA-IMDA Green Mark Platinum.

The Green Mark award for new data centres requires buildings to be energy efficient, water efficient, practice sustainable construction and management, promote indoor environmental quality and other green features.

STT Loyang is built with the aim of making it sustainable. STT Loyang is targeted to have market leading power usage effectiveness standards. It will also include sustainable features such as high-efficiency chillers, reduced water consumption through intelligent design, and energy-efficient uninterruptible power supplies.

Public cloud spending in Asia Pacific as a whole is believed to reach USD 15.08 billion by the end of 2018. This is a year-on-year increase 35.66% over 2017, according to one report. Additionally, the compound annual growth rate for cloud spending in Southeast Asia between 2016 to 2021 is believed to hit 32.58%.

Moreover, STT Loyang will also be built to comply with stringent global standards on business continuity and security. A Tier III DC facility, STT Loyang will provide high levels of redundancy in terms of power, storage, compute and network capacity to ensure smooth operations in the event of any unforeseen circumstances. There are also plans to make it Threat-Vulnerability Risk Assessment (TVRA)-certified to the highest level. This will offer the most secure operational environment.

Clement Goh, Southeast Asia CEO at STT GDC said, “The exponential growth of cloud providers in this region, coupled with increasing digital transformation efforts amongst enterprises will drive demand for data centre (DC) storage and compute capacity in Singapore and across the Asia Pacific region in the coming years. STT Loyang will enable us to meet the increasing demand for capacity, while tapping on to the latest technologies and sustainable design features to ensure a low carbon footprint and optimal energy efficiency.”

Construction on the new data centre will begin early next year. It will be located on the five-storey facility at Loyang Way, with Gross Floor Area of over 290 000 square feet and Net Lettable Area of 107 000 square feet. By mid-2020, STT Loyang should be completed.
