Partnership to accelerate Indonesian start-ups

The University of Indonesia is forming a strategic partnership with a ride-hailing giant in order to support teaching, research and community service at the University.

According to a recent press release, the collaboration was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was signed by the University’s Chancellor and the company’s President.

Accelerator Program

This partnership will bring forth an accelerator program for a number of potential start-ups engaged in the technology, medical and social fields.

Called the “UI Works” Accelerator Program, it is organised in partnership with a co-working space in Indonesia as it intends to assist potential start-ups born from the University’s academic community incubation.

The accelerator program is targeted for the University’s academic community as well as the young generation outside the campus that have start-ups with an existing prototype or a beta version of its product.

The Different Phases

The “UI Works” Accelerator Program is divided into three phases. These are:

  1. Pre-Accelerator
  2. Accelerator
  3. Demo Day

In the Pre-Accelerator phase, the candidates will be joining a selection process to find the ideal start-ups for the program.

For the Accelerator phase, the chosen start-ups will be joining an intensive program for around 4 months in order to develop their businesses at the commercial level.

This will be achieved with the help of professionals and entrepreneurs from successful start-ups that are invited to train the participants.

Demo Day, which is the final phase, will have selected start-ups meeting with investors who will mentor and grow their businesses.

Inspiring innovation

This partnership is proof that an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit can thrive when fully supported by digital industry players that have reached Decacorn level.

Hopefully, this initiative will inspire the University’s academics to develop and produce start-ups that will contribute to the advancement of the Indonesian economy to the next level.

The ride-hailing company emphasised their belief in the power of technology to make life better for everyone.

Their partnership with the University is in line with their commitment to Indonesia, which is summarised in the company’s master plan.

The company fully supports the creation of jobs, increasing the capacity of local talents in the field of information technology, technopreneurship, and technology innovation.

They aim to contribute in forming more technopreneurs, through this partnership, so that they can develop technological solutions and create new economic opportunities in the country.

Learning via internships

On top of fostering start-ups, the partnership between the University and the ride-hailing app will also include the Engineering Talent Future Leader program.

This will have final-level University students, from technical majors, to join in the selection for an internship opportunity at the company’s Indonesia or Singapore offices.

All are filled with the hope that this partnership would grow new start-ups in the University and for it to become a creative and innovative platform for the Indonesian youth.
