New technologies must work for the people: Vietnamese PM

The Vietnamese Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, has welcomed the G20 countries’ approach to the development of human-centred AI. The technologies must be for the people and maintain good human and moral values, he said.

According to a press release, the Minister said this at the G20 Summit session on innovation in Osaka, Japan on the afternoon of 28 June.

PM Phuc applauded Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s initiative on free data circulation in parallel with ensuring reliability, asking for a global framework of laws and principles on data circulation and administration.

Vietnam and ASEAN member states are willing to cooperate with G20 countries to encourage innovation and maximise the benefits of the digital economy, on the basis of respecting international and domestic laws, he affirmed.

The Minister proposed an initiative to promote the establishment of a global network connecting innovation centres, including AI research and development centres, which will encourage the sharing of knowledge and new technologies.

The centres will also support developing nations to take advantage of opportunities from innovation and AI, thus ensuring that no one is left behind and promoting peace and sustainable development in the digital age, the release said.

Prime Minister Phuc and other leaders discussed the reality and outlook of the global economy, trade, and investment. They stated that the world economy is stable but grows slowly with many risks, affirming their continuous use and coordination of policy tools to facilitate sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth, consolidate trust, and prevent risks and uncertainties.

The release said that on the same day, the Prime Minister had bilateral meetings with the Party General Secretary and President of China, the US and Chilean Presidents, the Prime Ministers of India and Canada, the President of the European Commission, and the Director-General of the World Health Organisation.

The meetings were held to discuss measures to further deepen Vietnam’s relations with partners. Later in the evening, the Prime Minister joined other leaders to attend the official banquet of the G20 Summit, hosted by Japanese PM Shinzo Abe.

He also stated that Vietnam identifies the digital economy as one of the important drivers for economic growth and is going to issue a national strategy on digital transformation later this year.

The Vietnamese government recently issued an ICT reference framework for the development of smart cities.

The ICT reference framework is a set of functions to link smart regions, applications, and urban services to ensure consistency and synchronisation in smart city development. This is according to Decision 829/QD-BTTTT on the ICT reference framework issued on 31 May by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).

The priority fields and services for smart city development include smart city management, water systems, waste collection and treatment systems, grids, lighting systems, traffic systems, education, and healthcare.

In recent years, many provinces and cities in Vietnam have started plans to build pilot projects on smart city development such as HCM City, Ha Noi, Da Nang, Thua Thien-Hue, Binh Duong, Da Lat, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, and Can Tho.
