In a document sent to relevant authorities, the municipal Department of Information and Communication asked the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) to install a free public Wi-Fi system at tourist spots in the urban districts of Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, and Tay Ho, the outlying district of Ha Dong and Son Tay town.

Hanoi plans to provide free Wi-Fi at all tourist sites in four districts and one town in the city. The department has asked the Department of Tourism, the Department of Culture and Sports, and the local People’s Committees to work with VNPT to ensure the progress of installing free public wireless internet systems.

According to a press release, previously, in 2017, the city started offering free Wi-Fi access around popular destinations such as Hoan Kiem Lake, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long historical site, Huong (Perfume) Pagoda, and Bat Trang Ceramic Craft Village.

VNPT recently received a oneM2M certificate, a global international certificate for technology solutions, for its VNPT IoT Platform. The organisation had to undergo a minimum of 282 tests under the rigorous testing category specified by oneM2M.

After going through the tests, VNPT and Authorised Test Lab, a testing unit of oneM2M, will continue to finalise their documents and submit them to the global certification forum (GCF) for the VNPT IoT Platform to be reviewed and issued a certificate. oneM2M is an agency founded by 200 members, including world-leading telecommunication carriers and technology companies.

Certified by the organisation, the VNPT IoT Platform is valid globally. This technology platform is interoperable and compatible with all products of more than 200 members of the oneM2M community. VNPT is one of 20 telecom technology companies in the world to receive the MEF 3.0 certificate, a title of the highest quality in the field of international telecommunications networks.

It is expected that revenue from IT will account for about 20% of the total revenue of VNPT by the end of 2025. The number of digital businesses is expected to increase to 70,000 by 2025 and 100,000 by 2030, according to a draft national strategy on digital businesses by the Ministry of Information and Communications.

The development of the national strategy is a step forward to the realisation of the Prime Minister’s Directive No. No.01/CT-TTg dated 14 January on promoting digital businesses in Vietnam. The workforce of digital businesses is expected to increase to 1.2 million over the next five years and 1.5 million by 2030, the draft strategy stated.

These businesses’ annual export value would grow by 10-20% in the 2020-2025 period and 20-30% beyond 2025. By 2030, digital businesses are expected to account for 10% and 20% of GDP by 2025 and 2030, respectively. The draft strategy sets a goal to bring the country into the top three countries in the ASEAN region; the top 70 in the world for technology and innovation ranking by 2025; the top two in ASEAN and the top 50 in the world by 2030.

At present, Vietnam is home to about 43,000 enterprises operating in the IT sector, along with 17,000 others doing business in distributing and providing IT products and solutions.
