Vietnam to Release Weekly Internet Speed Index

The Department of Telecom at the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) will publish the weekly index of Vietnam’s Internet quality on its portal starting this month. The release of the Quality of Experience is to protect the interest of Internet users and raise the competitive edge of service providers.

According to a news report, the project was announced by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Centre (VNNIC) on 11 August. The VNNIC will collect the data from its Internet Speed system and publicise the information at the official portal. The released data will help users evaluate the Internet quality themselves. They are also advised to install the i-Speed app, the first Made-in-Vietnam Internet speed measuring app. It can check speed and quality and enables users to send feedback to service providers.

The app was developed by VNNIC from a web-based system to measure internet access quality in Vietnam. Available on iOS and Android platforms, i-Speed helps users check the speed of their Internet connection, including download and upload speeds, ping, and jitter, and quickly evaluates network service quality. Representatives from VNNIC and the Authority of Telecommunications said that i-Speed’s development together with data on Internet access quality has contributed to completing multidimensional statistics on Vietnam’s internet while promoting competitiveness between service providers.

In April, a report explained that figures from i-Speed show that average download and upload speeds across mobile networks reached 40.47 Mbps and 25.73 Mbps, respectively, in the first quarter. Those on fixed broadband were 57.60 Mbps and 47.40 Mbps. Last year, VNNIC joined hands with the Authority of Telecommunications and network service providers to develop internet speed measurement facilities in 30 localities nationwide. Soon, VNNIC will work to upgrade i-Speed to ensure that Vietnam has a safe and modern internet network and to improve the capacity of digital infrastructure to serve national digitalisation goals. Data on the internet connectivity speeds of internet service providers is announced on the official website, helping users choose suitable internet service providers.

In July, OpenGov Asia reported that Vietnam’s Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) adoption rate reached 44%, ranking second in ASEAN and 10th globally, VNNIC said in an effort to switch to IPv6, 44 out of 63 cities and provinces have issued their own action plans. IPv6 is expected to meet Vietnam’s demand to offer new and quality services such as the Internet of Things, 4G-LTE, and 5G networks, contributing to digital transformation and digital government building.

In the first half of this year, many localities such as Vinh Long, Binh Thuan, Hau Giang, Thai Binh, and Ha Tinh rolled out their plans to switch to IPv6. They partnered with the VNNIC to hold training for information technology officers in the field. The VNNIC also recently held a webinar on guidelines for IPv6 address planning for departments of information and communications in the central and Central Highlands regions. In Vietnam, 34 million mobile and 11 million Internet subscribers are using IPv6 services. As of mid-June, over 20% of information and public service portals by municipal and provincial authorities worked on the IPv6 platform.
