Vietnam-Australia Forum Aims to Boost Local AI Development

A Vietnam-Australia Artificial Intelligence (AI) Forum was held on 27 October, offering a platform for experts to share experience and initiatives to develop AI technologies in Vietnam. Participants proposed making and adjusting policies and laws to create a transparent legal corridor to encourage AI development, a recent news report informed.

It is necessary to invest in the research and production of practical AI products to serve the domestic market, attract resources inside and outside the country to build AI training centres, develop Vietnam’s innovative system, and connect innovative organisations between the two countries. The forum was jointly organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Aus4Innovation, and VnExpress e-newspaper.

Earlier in September, the two sides launched an AI cooperation network. The network aims to gather Vietnamese individuals, businesses, and organisations working in AI, both at home and abroad, to cooperate with Australian partners. As OpenGov Asia had reported, the network intends to bring Vietnam opportunities for learning from Australia and around the world to create a favourable environment for AI development to prosper in Vietnam. Through this, realising the ambitious goal set out by the national AI strategy, they seek to enter Vietnam into the top four of ASEAN and top 50 in the world in AI research, development, and application by 2030.

The partnership will serve as a prerequisite for building a community of sustainable AI cooperation in Vietnam and the world in the future. By launching the Vietnam-Australia AI cooperation network, the MoST aims to help promote the national AI strategy. People from all across the nation will be able to reap the benefits of the opportunities the AI sector brings through connecting one another and making way for access to AI support policies and programmes that are issued by the state agencies. Businesses participating in the network will have the opportunity to interact with specialists to find AI solutions. All while they partner with domestic and foreign counterparts in AI application and technology transfer.

The MoST Deputy Minister explained that management software and an online community space for members will be initially developed to enable members to share their opinions on AI development in Vietnam. Eventually, through boosting cooperation with many other countries they will work towards setting up a sustainable AI community. It is envisioned that various activities will facilitate computer science in the country.

Over the last few years, technological giants in Vietnam have poured their resources into developing AI technology manufacturing, trading, and digital transformation. Their decisions have reaped impressive results, especially when dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts of the field have explained that AI technology applications are Vietnam is predicted to witness a significant rise to serve socio-economic growth purposes. AI, with its useful implementations in diverse fields, might become the promising driving force to boost the economy, not to mention its tremendous values in education, healthcare, and legislation.

The Vietnamese government has issued a national strategy on the research, development, and application of AI till 2030. It aims to gradually turn the country into an innovation and AI hub in ASEAN and the world. Vietnam plans to set up 50 interconnected open databases in economic sectors by 2030. For this, the country is fine-tuning legal documents, creating a legal framework regarding AI, and promoting international cooperation in the field.
