Indian Institute of Technology Launches Courses in Digital Transformation, Electric Vehicles

The Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay (IIT-Bombay), in partnership with a private educational technology platform, has launched two new certificate programmes in digital transformation and power electronics and motors for electric vehicles (EVs). As per a news report, the programmes aim to help learners gain technical, managerial, and leadership skills.

The four-month-long digital transformation certification, with live lectures, is designed for non-IT managers leading digital transformation initiatives. The course teaches participants how to identify opportunities to transform an organisation through the strategic implementation of new technologies and builds analytical skills to understand how to implement and execute the right solutions. The programme will be taught by a professor from the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management at IIT-Bombay. A senior industry leader will be the visiting faculty for the programme.

The power electronics and motors for electric vehicles (EVs) certification programme is four-and-a-half months long. It covers courses in motor design, power converter design, and motor drives. The programme will be taught by faculty from the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT-Bombay. As per International Energy Agency (IEA) Global EV Outlook report, EV sales shares across all modes in India are expected to grow to 30% by 2030. The online certificate programme aims to impart the necessary skills to learners that are willing to build a career in the field, an official from IIT-Bombay stated. The last date to apply is 19 November and classes will begin on 20 November.

Earlier, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, the Indian government launched a web portal for EVs called E-Amrit. The website will be a one-stop destination for all information related to electric vehicles such as their purchase, investment opportunities, policies, and subsidies. According to a news report, the portal will also “bust myths” around the adoption of EVs. It will essentially complement all the initiatives being taken by the government on raising awareness on EVs and sensitising consumers on the benefits of switching to electric vehicles.

The country’s think tank, the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), developed the platform. NITI Aayog explained that it will add more features and introduce innovative tools to make the E-Amrit portal more interactive and user-friendly. The report said NITI Aayog created the portal under a collaborative knowledge exchange programme with the UK government. This is a part of the UK-India Joint Roadmap 2030, signed by the Prime Ministers of both countries.

Over the past few years, India has launched several various initiatives to accelerate the adoption of EVs. These include the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicle (FAME) scheme and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Further, Indian states have launched their own EV policies that include subsidies for the purchase of electric two, three, and four-wheelers. The report informed that states have also exempted EVs from paying registration fees and road tax. The country’s capital has been a pioneer in successfully implementing its EV policy. The city witnessed an uptick in the registration of EVs in the last few months and has now withdrawn the benefits of the subsidies from its policy.
