Indian Institute of Technology, Madras Launches National-Level Internships in AI, Data Science

  • The Indian Institute of Technology in Madras (IIT-Madras) The Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBC-DSAI) has invited students for the national-level ‘Summer Internships 2022’ programme. The goal is to help students gain hands-on experience working on cutting-edge discoveries, with some of the country’s leading experts in data science and artificial intelligence (AI).

RBCDSAI was established to bring a cohort of researchers together to tackle diverse challenges in big data using machine learning (ML) and AI. The centre said, “We invite exceptional undergraduates and researchers of all levels with an experience and passion for data science and artificial intelligence to join our ever-expanding team of researchers and make a positive societal impact through their research.” According to the website, RBCDSAI has a highly qualified team of researchers and support staff. The centre is well-equipped with the necessary infrastructure to lay down a conducive environment for the researchers. The centre is currently working with different government organisations and industry players to provide insights and solutions to various aspects of nation-building. As per a report, students who are in the pre-final year of their fourth year (regular/full-time), under graduation (engineering or science) in any Indian university/education institution can apply. The last date to apply is 31 March and applicants can apply at the official portal. Some of the projects that the students can work on include:

  • Obstacle avoidance in robotics.
  • Deployable AI for smart buildings: transfer learning method development for the DL-based controls in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).
  • Data commons at IIT-Madras.
  • Synchronised multi-scale and multi-sensor traffic data from Indian urban roads.
  • AI/ML methods for food authentication (honey) using frugal sensors such as handheld spectroscopy and mobile-attached devices.
  • Deep learning phenomenology.
  • Tools for data-driven engineering.
  • The data-driven monitoring of water networks.

With government initiatives such as Digital India, AI has gotten a significant boost over the last few years. The government is using AI in several fields, including managing traffic flows, improving digital exchange systems and strengthening criminal investigations. In the industry, AI is being deployed for several operations like inventory tracking and management, data sharing and perception, enhanced customer experience, improved hiring processes, data mining, and optimisation for businesses. The AI market in India is expected to grow at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.2% and reach US$7.8 billion in total revenues by 2025.

According to a survey from last year, businesses in India will accelerate the adoption of both AI-centric and AI non-centric applications over the next five years. Amongst the three categories, the AI software segment will dominate the market. Organisations are leveraging multiple AI applications to manage operations and scale supply chains in response to real-time or predicted demands and many more to provide benefits for their customers, improve ROI, and achieve cost savings. Increasing business resilience and enhancing customer retention are among the top business objectives for using AI by Indian enterprises, the survey had noted. About 51% of organisations are processing transactional and social media data through AI and ML solutions.
