HKPC Unveils New GreenTech Platform

Image: HKPC, Press Release

The Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) launched Green Hall recently. The government has set out the vision of “Zero-carbon Emissions, Liveable City, Sustainable Development”, as Hong Kong transitions to a low-carbon economy and strives to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050.

Pulling from the goal to achieve carbon neutrality, Green Hall aims to become a Super-Connector platform for green technologies (GreenTech) in Hong Kong, where stakeholders gather and exchange ideas, expertise and experience about the latest innovations and best practices. Green Hall will facilitate collaboration across Government, industry, academic and research sectors, and foster the adoption of more GreenTech by industry and the public, to help Hong Kong achieve carbon neutrality.

Located in the HKPC Building at Kowloon Tong, Green Hall hosts a range of innovative GreenTech research and development (R&D) and applications by HKPC, its Automotive Platforms and Application Systems R&D Centre (APAS), numerous partners and exhibitors.

The GreenTech on display has a wide scope of applications, covering different aspects of daily lives to provide people greener choices when they make decisions about clothing, food, housing and transportation. Green Hall welcomes industry players to build networks and discuss the latest GreenTech trends. Moreover, the public is welcome to come and explore the unlimited potential of GreenTech.

For example, for clothing-related GreenTech, there is the Green Machine, an advanced technology that supports the separation, recycling and reuse of blended fabrics. For Food-related GreenTech, there is the Food TranSmarter, which provides a simple, clean and hygienic solution for collecting and shipping food waste. For Housing-related GreenTech, there is the Smokeless Joss Paper, which can greatly reduce smoke and air pollution. And for Transportation-related GreenTech, Green Hall displays electric vehicles and the related charging applications.

The Chairman of HKPC stated that HKPC strives for achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, and hopes Green Hall will inspire industry stakeholders to translate more innovative GreenTech ideas into practical use to benefit the community, foster industry-wide adoption of GreenTech, familiarise the public with the city’s best homegrown GreenTech achievements that have extensive applications in their daily lives such as clothing, food, housing and transportation choices.

HKPC’s goal is to support and promote the invention and adoption of more cutting-edge GreenTech to create a green, low-carbon future for Hong Kong. The Secretary for the Environment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region noted that the Government announced Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050 last year has put forth four major decarbonisation strategies, namely net-zero electricity generation, energy-saving and green buildings, green transport and waste reduction.

To achieve the carbon neutrality vision, the support of the community is essential for addressing challenges such as the cost of decarbonisation, technological breakthroughs and demand for talent.

HKPC’s Green Hall will help Hong Kong tackle the challenges while transitioning to a low-carbon and green economy. The initiatives launched by the HKPC will support Hong Kong to decarbonise, reduce air pollutants and minimise waste, and ultimately move towards the goal of carbon neutrality before 2050.

A licensing agreement signing ceremony for the “Food Waste Total Recycling System” (the System), jointly developed by HKPC and a consumer services company was held during the opening ceremony. Supported by the Public Sector Trial Scheme under the Innovation and Technology Fund of the Innovation and Technology Commission, the System is advantageous to the environment as it greatly simplifies food waste collection. All kinds of food waste can be sorted and pre-treated at the source into slurry for easy transportation and conversion into renewable energy, animal feeds, etc.

The licensing agreement will enable the company to further upgrade and develop the System and expand its adoption from Hong Kong to the Mainland market, opening a new chapter for this local GreenTech R&D to further flourish and popularise.

HKPC will continue to promote R&D and the incubation of new GreenTech through the provision of industry support and advanced technologies for creating green values and spawning business opportunities.
