Australia’s Northern Territory Bolstering Cybersecurity

The Government is committing AU$7.5 million per year to strengthen cyber security controls and capabilities, ensuring the ongoing protection of Northern Territory Government systems in the face of constantly changing risks. As cyber threats become more frequent and the global cyber security landscape grows increasingly complex, the Territory Labor Government acknowledges the importance of consistent investment in safeguarding Territorians’ data held by the Government.

This funding will strengthen the protection of the Government’s critical infrastructure by increasing the cyber security workforce with the addition of 30 new graduate and specialised roles. Furthermore, it will facilitate the acquisition of additional cyber security tools and enhance capabilities in cyber threat monitoring, intelligence, and analysis.

Additionally, this initiative will enable the Northern Territory to align with national endeavours aimed at enhancing cyber security posture as part of national strategies.

This announcement also builds upon a collaborative investment made by the Federal Government and Charles Darwin University (CDU). The partnership aims to offer two new vocational education and training (VET) programs in the field of cyber security.

The demand for cyber security professionals is steadily increasing, and CDU’s Certificate IV in Cyber Security has already attracted 25 students this year, reflecting the growing interest in the program.

The Minister for Corporate and Digital Development emphasised that the rise in bold and sophisticated cybercrimes necessitates a strong defence by the NT Government.

By enhancing investments in safeguarding digital assets and providing resources to a dedicated team of cyber professionals, the NT Government is reinforcing its ability to protect valuable Territory data and systems.

The introduction of 30 additional cyber security positions across various NT Government departments will play a significant role in bolstering these protective measures.

To conclude, the Territory Labor Government’s commitment to investing AU$7.5 million annually in cyber security controls and capabilities demonstrates its dedication to staying ahead of evolving risks in the ever-growing global cyber security landscape.

By prioritising the protection of critical infrastructure, bolstering the cyber security workforce, and leveraging advanced tools for threat monitoring and analysis, the Northern Territory is positioning itself at the forefront of national efforts to uplift cyber security posture.

With a strong focus on technology and collaboration, including partnerships with educational institutions, such as Charles Darwin University, the government is not only addressing the growing demand for cyber security experts but also fostering a culture of digital resilience and preparedness. Through these initiative-taking measures, the Territory is safeguarding its digital assets and ensuring the security and privacy of Territorians’ data for a digitally connected future.

The 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy (the Strategy) was announced by Australia’s Minister for Cyber Security in December 2022. The Strategy aims to position Australia as the world’s most cyber secure nation by 2030.

Through a coordinated national approach, the government is focusing on four key areas: fostering a secure economy and vibrant cyber ecosystem, strengthening critical infrastructure and the government sector’s resilience, ensuring a sovereign and capable defence against cyber threats, and establishing Australia as a trusted global leader in cyber security, collaborating with neighbouring countries to enhance regional resilience.
