State-run group Viettel has reported a successful trial of its 5G Private Mobile Network (5G PMN) for a privately-owned smart factory located in the northern port city of Hai Phong, Vietnam. This milestone marks the first smart factory in Vietnam to operate automatically using a 5G mobile service, providing significant advantages such as high-speed connectivity, low latency, and support for multiple connections.

During the first phase of collaboration, Viettel will supply 5G private networks catering to various applications, such as augmented reality for video calls, assembly stations, product testing management, and direct supervision of the production process. The goal is to have these 5G private networks fully operational at the private electronic equipment and components factory in Hai Phong, supporting thousands of devices by the end of 2023.

According to Dao Xuan Vu, the Deputy General Director of Viettel, the company firmly believes in the notion that technology exists to address societal challenges and enhance the overall quality of life. Viettel has already implemented 5G technology in 58 out of 63 provinces and cities in Vietnam. As a result, the company assumes a crucial role in establishing a secure, robust, and dependable network infrastructure. This infrastructure serves as the bedrock for fostering a dynamic and competitive digital service ecosystem that ultimately contributes to the creation of a digital society.

The 5G Private Mobile Network is a dedicated mobile network that provides connecting mobile services for organisations and individuals who require specialised devices or machinery that demand real-time connectivity. This cutting-edge technology represents a globally emerging trend, anticipated to witness substantial growth at an annual rate of 51.2% from 2023 to 2030.

In April, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) announced an auction for frequencies within the 2300-2400 MHz waveband. This initiative was designed to facilitate the progress of network operators in deploying and enhancing their 4G and 5G technologies. The starting price set for this waveband was VND 12.88 billion (US$ 548,481) per MHz per annum, and each company had the opportunity to bid for up to 30 MHz. The companies are allowed to use the wavebands for 15 years for 4G and 5G purposes.

Last month, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) introduced the VinaPhone 5G service during the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF 2023), which was held from 2 June to 8 July. As OpenGov Asia reported, the event allowed visitors to spread the festive atmosphere and experience by live-streaming fireworks performances at the highest transmission speed of up to 2.2Gbps, which is ten times faster on average compared to the existing 4G network.

Throughout the festival, festival-goers had access to the VinaPhone 5G service at various locations, including Dragon Bridge, Bach Dang Street, Tran Hung Dao Street, and the surrounding areas. Individuals also utilised VinaPhone 5G for an array of online experiences such as streaming movies, listening to music, or participating in online conferences. To avail themselves of the service, individuals possessing 5G-enabled devices could activate the 5G feature on their phones by texting “DK 5G” to the number 888.

Digital infrastructure is among the government’s top priorities. It has set a target to be among the top 30 nations with the most advanced and robust digital infrastructure by 2025. Vietnam’s next wave of socio-economic development will come from innovation, science, and technology, driven by the digital economy.
