The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s T Stone Robotics Institute (CURI) collaborated with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corporation (HKSTP) to organise the CUHK Robotics Open Day at HKSTP, where they showcased their leading innovations to the public. As part of the event, a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between HKSTP, a Chinese multinational technology company, and CUHK’s Hong Kong Centre for Logistics Robotics (HKCLR).

The MoU marked a momentous partnership aimed at co-incubating and nurturing young talents in the fields of robotics and AI technologies. By leveraging the combined resources and expertise of HKSTP, the technology company, and CUHK, the collaboration aspired to foster the growth of future innovators and pioneers in these cutting-edge industries.

This event carried additional significance as it aligned with the celebrations commemorating CUHK’s 60th anniversary. Strengthening the university’s ties with the government, industry, investment, and academic sectors, the collaboration aimed to contribute significantly to the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong, thereby ensuring a prosperous and technologically advanced future for the region.

At the opening ceremony, guests included the Council Chairman of CUHK, Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, Director of T Stone Group Limited, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, and Director of CURI and HKCLR.

The Council Chairman of CUHK acknowledged the importance of the occasion, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase the research achievements of CUHK to its valued partners and supporters.

The Under Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry announced the government’s upcoming launch of the “Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme” later in the year, with a substantial funding of HK$10 billion. She expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with CUHK to expedite technology transfer and commercialization of world-class R&D outcomes, particularly in cutting-edge robotics technologies.

In the past, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor highlighted that CUHK held a prominent position as a leading robotics pioneer, continuously pushing the boundaries of technological advancement. The Robotics Open Day served as an incredible opportunity for the university to showcase and celebrate its remarkable achievements in the field of robotics. It also provided the public and the industry with a chance to witness and be inspired by the limitless possibilities offered by robotics technology.

HKSTP, the tech company, and HKCLR joined forces and signed a collaboration agreement aimed at nurturing and incubating the next generation of young scholars and entrepreneurs in the tech industry. The agreement aimed to empower these talented individuals to bring transformative breakthroughs to the world through their innovations in robotics and AI technologies.

The Chief Executive Officer of HKSTP, the Investment Director of the tech company’s Capital Group and Incubator Group, and the Director of HKCLR were the signatories representing their respective parties during the agreement signing ceremony.

HKSTP’s earlier collaboration with CUHK and the tech company exemplified their collective long-term mission to expedite the transformation of exceptional research into commercial success. The alliance aimed to foster technological innovation and nurture talent in the tech industry, contributing significantly to Hong Kong’s Information and Technology (I&T) landscape.

The Director of CURI and HKCLR expressed that since the establishment of CURI and HKCLR, they had successfully trained numerous post-doctoral researchers and facilitated the creation of eight robotics companies, two of which had attained global leadership in their respective domains. The Robotics Open Day was a platform designed to exhibit their latest research outputs and foster potential collaborations with industry players and venture capitalists in pursuit of research and commercialization opportunities.

Furthermore, the Senior Vice President of the tech company and its Capital and Incubator Group acknowledged tech firm longstanding partnership with Hong Kong’s academic institutions. Leveraging their global industrial resources, the tripartite collaboration will support the commercialisation of research outcomes in the robotics field, contributing to Hong Kong’s growth as an international I&T hub.
