China’s technical hub Chengdu made a historic statement that sparked enthusiasm all around the nation. The city announced intentions to give computing power vouchers worth up to 10 million yuan (2,068,000 SGD) annually to benefit a variety of organisations, including universities, SMEs focused on technology, computing power intermediates, and scientific research organisations.

The programme seeks to give these participants access to the computing power of the Chengdu Intelligent Computing Centre and the National Supercomputing Chengdu Centre. The first of its type in China, this innovative move demonstrates Chengdu’s dedication to taking the lead in the digital transformation revolution, which is being fueled by the fusion of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing.

The eager candidates for the much-awaited computer power coupons were found promptly. The Chengdu New Economy Public Management Service Platform received many requests for computing capacity in just two weeks. This frenzy exemplifies Chengdu’s unwavering commitment to leading in this field as well as the industry’s rising potential.

The subject of healthcare is one striking example of computing power’s transformational effects. This revolution has been led by the West China Institute of Medical Robotics, which has created numerous robotic prototypes that have been used in clinical and educational settings.

One of these inventions is a cloud-connected robot for hand rehabilitation that makes use of the computational power of the Chengdu Intelligent Computational Centre. By enabling accurate user intention perception, this state-of-the-art technology is revolutionising smart healthcare, improving patient outcomes.

The Chengdu Intelligent Computing Centre has been instrumental in promoting innovation since its founding. Nearly 50 scientific research institutions and universities have benefited from its comprehensive services, which have spawned numerous ground-breaking research models.

The Chinese General Secretary Xi Jinping’s emphasis on quickening the creation of a new generation of AI serves as a reminder of the strategic significance of AI in the current technological arms race. This goal has been quickly realised in Chengdu, which is acquainted with the crucial part AI plays in advancing industry, driving technical advancement, and driving the digital economy.

The designation of Chengdu as a national new-generation AI innovation and development pilot zone was accepted by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2020 while the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology provided additional assistance for this by establishing the Chengdu National AI Innovation and Application Pilot Zone.

In accordance with this high-level plan, Chengdu has developed a four-pronged strategy that encourages innovation through demand-driven scenarios, expands industries through innovation, and stimulates reforms through industrial development, supporting stable growth in its AI industry.

Data, processing power, and algorithms are the three essential foundations on which Chengdu’s AI business is built. The city has released several policy documents to support this development, such as “Chengdu’s Special Policy on Promoting the Development of the Big Data Industry” and “Chengdu’s Policies and Measures to Accelerate the Development of Computing Power Industry Focusing on Supercomputing and Intelligent Computing.”

The recent proposal of “Chengdu’s Several Policies and Measures on Further Promoting the High-quality Development of the Artificial Intelligence Industry” highlights Chengdu’s commitment to encouraging the expansion of data, computing, and algorithm-driven enterprises.

In recent years, Chengdu has taken the initiative to include cloud technology into its system for developing the industrial Internet. The city has aggressively fostered the development of platforms for both major organisations and small and medium-sized enterprises through the action of “using the cloud to empower intelligence.”

With over 82,000 businesses using the cloud, Chengdu is now among the top municipalities and sub-provincial cities for cloud adoption. Strategic partnerships, like the one with mobile providers to build a “5G+Industrial Internet” environment, have also shown to have real advantages.
