Project Overwatch: Singapore’s Transport Evolution

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The evolution of public transportation in Singapore has always been closely intertwined with technological advancements. As the nation steps into an era marked by digital innovation, the public transport landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, ensuring that commuters experience a seamless journey from start to finish.

Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Transport and Sustainability and the Environment, recently shed light on the pivotal role of digital technologies in shaping Singapore’s public transport system during the SMRT’s launch event for Project Overwatch.

The event marked a significant milestone in Singapore’s journey towards a more efficient, reliable, and technologically advanced public transport system. With Singaporeans’ reliance on the MRT network growing year by year, it has become imperative to enhance the system’s reliability and operational efficiency.

Dr Amy highlighted that the MRT network, which has been the backbone of Singapore’s public transport since 1987, ensures accessibility for people across the island, connecting their places of residence, work, and leisure.

One of the key challenges faced by a rapidly expanding rail network is maintaining its reliability amidst growing complexity. Dr Amy stressed that achieving a high level of service reliability required not only substantial effort and investment but also a willingness to innovate. While physical infrastructure enhancements play a crucial role, the integration of digital technologies emerges as a pivotal factor in ensuring smooth operations.

Project Overwatch, introduced by SMRT, exemplifies Singapore’s commitment to harnessing digital solutions to optimise public transportation. Dr Amy highlighted Overwatch’s remarkable capabilities, which rely on artificial intelligence (AI) and real-time data analytics.

The system’s ability to monitor rail lines in real-time allows for the immediate detection of anomalies. This enables rail operators and control staff to take swift pre-emptive actions to rectify faults, preventing potential disruptions before they escalate.

The power of AI truly comes to the fore as Overwatch analyses continuous video data from train activities. This analysis provides insights into potential congestion points and suggests alternate routes for rerouting. In the event of unexpected train halts or delays, Overwatch ensures prompt notification to the operations control centre. Furthermore, it tracks the positions of affected trains during faults, allowing for a focused and efficient response.

The impact of digital technologies on public transport reliability cannot be understated. Dr Amy highlighted that the Overwatch system has significantly contributed to enhancing overall reliability, leading to a 30% drop in delays of up to 5 minutes. Beyond the immediate benefits of reducing disruptions, such advancements play a critical role in boosting commuters’ confidence in the public transport system’s reliability and efficiency.

Dr Amy reiterated that digital transformation in public transportation extends far beyond operational enhancements. It speaks to Singapore’s commitment to creating a future-ready transport system that leverages cutting-edge technologies for the benefit of its citizens. As the rail network continues to expand, digital solutions like Overwatch pave the way for seamless, reliable, and efficient journeys for all.

Overwatch, which was released in October 2020, serves as a showcase for SMRT’s creative application of technology for green transportation options. To increase its beneficial effects, it is gradually being implemented on numerous train lines, including the Thomson-East Coast, East-West (first quarter of 2024), and North-South Lines.

Additionally, SMRT as a private state-owned company, wants to improve Overwatch by including functions like data analytics for rail passenger loading, bus statistics, and carbon emissions from transport routes.
