India: Cloud Skills for Employment Opportunities

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and two industry stakeholders, including a tech giant, are offering cloud skills training to 1,500 individuals under the Accelerated Mission for Better Employment and Retention (AMBER ) Project. The objective is to equip these learners with valuable skills and connect them to employment opportunities.

As part of this collaboration, participants go through a workforce development initiative tailored to individuals who are unemployed or underemployed. It encompasses fundamental cloud skills training alongside valuable career guidance, such as creating resumes and preparing for interviews.

By using real-world scenario-based exercises, hands-on labs, and coursework, the learners receive training in various technologies. This includes Linux, Python, networking, security, and relational databases, ensuring a well-rounded skillset for their professional development.

Additionally, the programme covers the cost for participants to take an industry-recognised certification exam, which serves as a credential validating their proficiency in cloud skills and knowledge. Furthermore, this certification opens doors to job opportunities within the cloud and IT sectors, connecting learners with local employers.

AMBER represents a collaborative effort between the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), operating under MSDE, and a private entity. It is co-funded by MSDE’s Skill Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP) programme and private philanthropy. Its overarching goal is to provide training to 30,000 young individuals, with an emphasis on gender equity, aiming for 50% of the beneficiaries to be women.

According to the government, there has been a significant and rapid upward trend in boosting women’s engagement and interest in digital skills training. To empower women and facilitate their access to online resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities, a collaborative partnership between the government and the industry is deemed crucial. These efforts aim to support women in building sustainable livelihoods and securing employment opportunities at the grassroots level.

Atul Kumar Tiwari, the Secretary of MSDE highlighted how automation and other technological advancements are transforming the job landscape and offering significant economic growth opportunities for India. He said that partnering with this prominent tech company is crucial for individuals seeking to acquire cloud computing skills. Moreover, it will expand avenues for women to pursue careers in the tech industry.

The Ministry is committed to developing competencies in domains that are undergoing transformation due to demographic shifts and technological advancements, such as Industry 4.0 and Web 3.0. Outcome-driven skills training initiatives like Project AMBER will harness the immense potential of India’s young population, Tiwari explained.

According to an official, the workforce development programme not only introduces entry-level talent into the job market but also supports individuals in launching careers in the cloud industry. It empowers organisations across India to enhance their competitive advantage with in-demand talent, assisting them in accelerating their digital transformation efforts.

MSDE has launched several tech-based training initiatives across the country. In July, it unveiled AI for India 2.0, a free online training programme focusing on artificial intelligence (AI). As OpenGov Asia reported, the project includes a Python course that caters to learners in nine languages, such as Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, and others. The primary focus of the project is to target youth, including college students, fresh graduates, and early professionals, providing them with training on AI and machine learning (ML). The aim is to prepare them for a secure and prosperous career in the technology field in the future.
