The University of Malaya (UM), in conjunction with its Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, is set to officially establish a significant partnership with The Center of Applied Data Science (CADS) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA). This collaboration is designed to advance their joint objective of promoting the development of crucial data literacy and in-demand data-driven practices in the national workforce.

This strategic alliance between UM and CADS is poised to reshape the technological and industrial landscape, igniting a data-driven revolution in the country within the rapidly evolving realm of Data Science.

The signing of the MoU and MoA, with the presence of the Vice President of Group Technology and Commercialization at a global Malaysian energy group, underscores a commitment to nurturing a resilient and future-ready workforce, particularly in the tech arena.

As technology continues its relentless advancement, the global demand for skilled professionals in areas such as data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related fields is experiencing an unprecedented surge. Professionals who excel in analysing, interpreting, and extracting valuable insights from data have become indispensable assets for any modern organisation.

In alignment with the vision of Universiti Malaya as “A global university impacting the world” and its tagline “Serving the Nation, Impacting the World,” UM’s international recognition and consistent high global rankings highlight its commitment to continuous learning and upskilling, aiming to address skill gaps prevalent in the tech industry and the broader community.

Within this transformative partnership, UM and CADS will collaborate to create dynamic academic programs and data literacy learning modules. These programs will be meticulously designed to align with the ever-evolving field of data science and global data-driven practices, catering to both the technical and non-technical aspects of contemporary business needs.

Leveraging the capabilities of CADS.AI Skills Intelligence Platform™, an AI-powered platform for assessing skills and facilitating learning, this collaboration will offer advanced courses and automated tracking of skills growth to UM students, providing them with invaluable hands-on industry experience. This initiative takes the collaboration to the next level by bringing together academia and cutting-edge data-driven AI technology.

This partnership follows CADS’s introduction of the region’s first Responsible AI Skill Certificate and its recognition as a ‘Cool Vendor’ by Gartner Inc., a leading global analyst firm, for its innovative approach and impact in the tech field.

The Founder and CEO at CADS emphasised the commitment to nurturing talent and future-proofing organisations through enhanced data and AI literacy, and analytics for hiring. The partnership with UM aims to prepare the workforce for a data-driven era.

This collaboration not only aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry but also offers revenue-sharing opportunities through training and certification programs, fostering mutual growth. Additionally, CADS will serve as an expert panel, providing insights and guidance to UM for student-related activities requiring expert consultation.

The Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology highlighted the timeliness of this collaboration, particularly in response to the increasing demand for Data Science graduates and related academic programs. This collaboration positions Malaysia on a trajectory toward digitalisation and achieving high-income nation status.

Associate Professor Dr. Sri Devi Ravana, a key initiator of this collaboration, underscores its critical timeliness and strategic importance. In today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape, collaboration between academia and industry players like CADS is vital for nurturing a highly qualified tech workforce and advancing cutting-edge research, which benefits both sectors and the nation as a whole.

UM and CADS are enthusiastic about this strategic partnership and its transformative potential for academia, industry, and the community. The MoU signing ceremony marks the beginning of a significant collaboration aimed at nurturing tech-savvy human capital capable of thriving in a digital economy.
