Tāhūrangi, the Ministry of Education’s new online platform for curriculum content, teaching resources, and news, is now live. “We know that finding suitable teaching resources is harder for people than it has to be. The new platform is designed to make that experience quicker and easier,” the Ministry of Education said in a statement. Parents and caregivers can also access resources and information to help students with their learning.
Tāhūrangi’s content aims to encourage effective teaching and learning in various educational contexts. This includes support for the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum (Te Whāriki: He Whāriki mātauranga mō ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa), Māori-medium schools (Te Marautanga o Aotearoa), and the New Zealand Curriculum. Additionally, the platform plans to expand its offerings to include resources for kindergarten schools (Te Whāriki a Te Kōhanga Reo).
Tāhūrangi boasts the attributes of a modern curriculum hub, making it easy to search, organise, download, and share educational resources and teaching materials. Its user-friendly features include bilingual te reo Māori and English search functions, allowing users to search in one language and discover results in both languages. Furthermore, it provides a variety of search filters, enabling the swift and precise retrieval of required resources.
Tāhūrangi offers users the ability to log in with their Education Sector Logon, granting them access to additional features tailored to their accounts. With this functionality, users can arrange and store resources, allowing them to curate personal collections for convenient future access. They can collaborate with other Tāhūrangi profile holders by sharing their collections. They can also save their language preferences for a customised experience.
The Ministry said that the current content accessible on Tāhūrangi is just the beginning. Moving forward, all its new curriculum content, resources, and teaching materials will be released on the platform.
The Ministry is presently in the process of transferring content from its existing websites to the new platform, and they are conducting a thorough review of all the content to ensure its alignment with schools’ teaching and learning needs. This effort also involves addressing a few minor technical issues.
Tāhūrangi will replace the educational material repositories of TKI, Kauwhata Reo, and Te Whāriki Online, ensuring clear and centralised access to the content. Tāhūrangi will become the main home for curriculum materials and resources. “While we move content onto Tāhūrangi from the existing websites, you might notice some changes to them. For example, you may be redirected from Tāhūrangi to the existing site if the content hasn’t already been moved,” the Ministry stated. It will notify users in advance of any changes in website access to facilitate a smooth transition to Tāhūrangi.
In June, to further support digital learning, the Ministry introduced the Connected Ako strategy. It is an extensive 10-year initiative aimed at shaping the digital and data landscape in New Zealand’s education sector. Upon adoption of the strategy, the key agencies will develop an action plan of work and priorities.
Their efforts will involve enhancing digital services, providing support for schools, and bolstering cybersecurity measures within all educational institutions. Moreover, they will engage with a diverse spectrum of stakeholders to develop inclusive digital strategies, cooperating to assess, strategise, and experiment with emerging technologies. They will foster a dedication to incorporating digital and data considerations throughout the educational journey.
