President W John Kao expressed his enthusiasm for this strategic alliance, highlighting the technology company’s global leadership in AI and NTHU’s unwavering dedication to AI research and education. As the first university in Taiwan to provide clear guidelines for applying AI in teaching and learning, NTHU envisions the comprehensive integration of AI into daily life and work through this groundbreaking collaboration.

The collaboration encompasses a broad spectrum, covering forward-looking, fundamental, and applied research. It extends to the cultivation of talent across diverse disciplines and startup incubation. Po-Wen Chiu, Vice President for Research and Development at NTHU, underscored the rich history of collaboration between NTHU and the global technology company, citing examples such as Prof Lee-Wei Yang’s groundbreaking application of AI computation to drug development for breast and pancreatic cancers.

Director Chun-Yi Lee outlined the innovation centre’s four core areas, emphasising its commitment to developing advanced AI technology, exploring cutting-edge AI applications, cultivating and certifying young talent, and promoting startup development. The centre aims to inject new momentum into AI education and industrial innovation in Taiwan, setting the stage for transformative advancements in the field.

One of the pivotal initiatives under this collaboration is the promotion of the Deep Learning Institute Ambassador Programme, designed to enhance students’ practical skills and innovative thinking in AI. The global technology company, known for its commitment to nurturing talent, has pledged support for startup companies established by NTHU students. This support includes technical assistance and development support, providing a crucial bridge between academia and industry.

Professor Chun-Yi Lee from the Department of Computer Science will serve as the director of the newly established innovation centre, with Professor Chi-Chun Lee from the Department of Electrical Engineering acting as the deputy director. The core objective of this initiative is to foster diverse and innovative cooperation in teaching, research, and entrepreneurship in Taiwan at the forefront of AI innovation.

This groundbreaking collaboration not only signifies a significant leap forward for NTHU in AI research and education but also establishes a dynamic synergy between academia and industry, setting the stage for pioneering advancements that will shape the future of AI in Taiwan and beyond.

By seamlessly integrating AI into teaching methodologies, the centre ensures that students are equipped with cutting-edge skills, preparing them for the rapidly evolving technological landscape. Additionally, the centre plays a vital role in talent cultivation, offering programmes like the Deep Learning Institute Ambassador Programme to nurture practical skills and innovative thinking in AI, contributing to a skilled workforce and fostering entrepreneurship through startup incubation.

The AI Innovation Centre acts as a bridge between research and industry, facilitating collaboration that ensures the practical relevance of innovations. This strategic positioning not only elevates the institution’s global standing but also contributes to shaping the international discourse on artificial intelligence.

The centre’s focus on developing an innovation ecosystem fosters a collaborative environment, encouraging diverse initiatives in teaching, research, and entrepreneurship. Likewise, the social impact of the centre extends beyond academia and industry, promising positive contributions to society through the application of AI in critical domains such as healthcare and finance.
