The Ministry of Communication and Information has been intensifying efforts to bolster telecommunication connectivity through initiatives like the Palapa Ring Fiber Optic Cable Network, 4G BTS, and SATRIA-1. Minister Budi Arie Setiadi has set an ambitious target to finalise the construction of 7,200 BAKTI Kominfo 4G BTS units in 3T areas (frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged regions) by 2024.

This concerted push signifies a steadfast commitment toward nationwide connectivity and technological advancement, aiming to bridge the digital divide across diverse landscapes.

“Developing diverse connectivity infrastructure, including the construction of BTS, is our commitment to ensuring equitable access to the digital realm for all,” stated the President during the inauguration of the Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency’s (BAKTI) 4G BTS in the Talaud Islands Regency.

This development encompassed the provisioning of internet access in underdeveloped frontier and outermost (3T) villages and the integration of the Republic of Indonesia Satellite (SATRIA) – 1 at the North Bowombaru BTS, North Sulawesi Province. The inauguration of internet access for underserved areas has transformed lives, drawing heartfelt appreciation from the community.

Ferdi Kaeng, Head of North Bowombaru Village, expressed gratitude for the newfound ease of internet access. The impact resonates deeply, especially among school children, highlighting the remarkable educational support this advancement has provided.

“It’s immensely beneficial for the community, particularly for our students. Previously, seeking network signals meant trekking to the mountains or the beach. Now, with internet accessibility at home, it significantly aids in studying.”

Dimas Aryadi, a TNI soldier in the Indonesia-Malaysia Border Security Task Force in North Kalimantan, appreciates the 4G BTS construction, which has greatly enhanced internet facilities at Long Nawang Post, benefiting border operations. DimasThe expanded internet coverage at all border posts emphasises its crucial role in national defence efforts.

Similarly, Kamri, Head of SMKN 3 in Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi Province, acknowledges the impact on education, emphasising how this support improved the teaching and learning process.

“The provision of free internet network from Bakti at our school has significantly enhanced the learning environment, facilitating better access to information and study materials for our students.”

These testimonials underscore the profound impact of enhanced connectivity on education, daily life, and national security, illustrating the transformative power of accessible technology in diverse communities.

While commending the completion of the 4G BTS in Talaud Islands Regency, the President urged expedited efforts in Papua, where 630 BTS installations are pending. Acknowledging the challenging terrain and security concerns, he directed the TNI Commander and the National Police Chief to facilitate immediate construction, ensuring security measures accompany the process.

Furthermore, the President highlighted setbacks in BTS development due to corruption-related criminal activities. Despite these challenges, he emphasised the paramount importance of continuing BTS construction for the betterment of communities.

“In the interest of the people, we cannot afford legal hindrances to stall these projects. We’ve undergone due legal processes; this development must persist. We cannot halt due to lost funds and resulting losses,” stressed the President.

Joining the President at this significant event were Minister of Communications and Information Technology Budi Arie Setiadi, Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, Governor of North Sulawesi Olly Dondokambey, and Regent of the Talaud Islands Elly Engelbert Lasut. This collective effort signifies a resolute commitment toward national connectivity and technological advancement.
