The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) secured 10 awards at the Asia Exhibition of Innovations & Inventions Hong Kong. Among these accolades are recognitions such as “Gold Medals with Congratulations of Jury” and the “1st Prize of Inventions Geneva Awards,” accompanied by two Gold and six Silver medals.

The Chairman of ASTRI acknowledged the competition, comprising over 110 groundbreaking inventions from Hong Kong and neighbouring regions, underscoring the significance of their remarkable achievements. Lee expressed gratitude for the jury’s affirmation of ASTRI’s Research and Development (R&D) capabilities and the market potential of their inventions.

Looking ahead, the Chairman emphasised ASTRI’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders and partners to advance innovation and technology (I&T) commercialisation, playing a pivotal role in positioning Hong Kong as an international hub for I&T.

The Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI stressed ASTRI’s commitment to fostering collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research institutes to enhance the city’s I&T ecosystem. He also underscored ASTRI’s mission to support research talents in transforming innovative ideas into smart technologies for societal benefit through knowledge and technology transfer.

ASTRI’s award-winning inventions span six categories, namely Smart City, Smart Home, Smart Finance, Health Technologies and Medicine, Smart Transportation, and Smart Industry. Notable among them is the Smart Contactless Robot Charging (SCRC) technology developed by Dr Chun-Kit Cheung and Mr Samuel Tak-lok Shum, earning them the “Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury” and the “1st Prize of Inventions Geneva Award.” The SCRC platform represents a cutting-edge wireless charging solution for industrial robotics, boasting over 90% power-grid-to-rectifier energy efficiency, a charging distance of up to 10cm, and misalignment tolerance capabilities. It is positioned as a green and smart solution for fully automatic 24×7 operation, aimed at optimising productivity and reducing labour costs.

In addition to the SCRC technology, ASTRI received Gold Medals for the Metalens-enabled Infrared Imaging System and the Design Automation Tool, developed by Mr Yunhe Lai and Ms Ying Suet Lau. This system provides a unified design process for the infrared optical system, offering a one-step and mass-production-ready fabrication process while minimising waste of infrared optical materials.

Another Gold Medal was awarded for the 5G Multi-Hop Backhaul for Smart Cities and Rural Communications, an innovation by Mr Eddy Chiu and Ms Yuxian Zhang, addressing the need for flexible and cost-effective 5G network deployment in various settings.

ASTRI also secured six Silver Medals for inventions spanning diverse applications. These include a Full-dome laser scanner, Optical Security Label for Anti-counterfeit, Data Encryption & Storage, Advanced Lighting System for Large-scale Green Architecture Applications, 5G Time-Sensitive Communications for New Industrialization, Method and Apparatus for Virtual Avatar Generation, and Image Processing Method for Multi-Frequency Ultrasound Probe Device.

ASTRI’s achievements align with the objectives outlined by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government in fostering innovation and technology. The government has emphasised the development of a robust innovation ecosystem, and ASTRI’s recognition at the exhibition highlights its role in advancing these goals. The institute’s diverse inventions, spanning areas such as Smart City and Health Technologies, contribute to the broader vision of positioning Hong Kong as a global innovation hub.

ASTRI’s focus on high-quality research and technological innovation is in line with the government’s efforts to cultivate a knowledge-based economy. The institute’s commitment to collaboration with stakeholders and support for research talents reflects the government’s aim to create an environment where industry, academia, and research institutes work cohesively. In essence, ASTRI’s achievements are in consonance with the HKSAR government’s endeavours to establish Hong Kong as a prominent international centre for innovation and technology.
