Curtin Malaysia: Engineering a Sustainable Tomorrow

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has introduced a Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Engineering (Honours) programme, designed to address the burgeoning demands of the energy sector in Malaysia and globally. This curriculum aligns with Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 goals, particularly emphasising energy transition and renewable energy initiatives.

The programme will offer students a comprehensive understanding of conceiving, designing, constructing, and managing a sustainable energy future. It will equip them with the requisite knowledge and skills to tackle the challenges and opportunities in energy sustainability, renewable energy technologies, and energy management, amidst the backdrop of advancing technology and digitalisation.

The Dean of Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Professor Tuong-Thuy Vu, stressed the critical role of energy engineers in steering the transition towards a clean energy future. The programme’s multidisciplinary approach integrates elements of electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering, preparing graduates for diverse roles in the energy sector.

In light of Sarawak’s aspirations for energy diversification and sustainability, the introduction of this programme holds significant promise. Graduates are poised to lead innovation and transformation in the energy industry, contributing to Sarawak’s renewable energy initiatives and overall sustainability efforts.

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni underscored the importance of preparing a skilled workforce to support Sarawak’s green energy initiatives. He highlighted the programme’s role in nurturing expertise for various innovative projects, including Carbon Capture, Use and Storage (CCUS) plants, hydrogen systems, floating solar, microalgae, and biofuel facilities.

The programme’s scope extends beyond traditional energy resources, exploring emerging opportunities in geothermal energy, hydrogen systems, systems engineering, environmental compliance, and sustainable energy practices. This holistic approach positions graduates to address contemporary energy challenges and explore new frontiers in renewable energy technologies.

Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President, and Chief Executive, Professor Simon Leunig, highlighted the programme’s global relevance in addressing energy and resources transition. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the programme aims to establish Curtin as a leader in research, education, and engagement for energy sustainability.

With a focus on stewardship of air, water, and land resources, the programme aims to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to drive forward the Energy in Transition movement globally. Through a rigorous curriculum encompassing foundational engineering principles and specialised study areas, graduates are prepared for pivotal roles in shaping a sustainable future.

The programme offers students a range of specialisations, including Energy Conversion Technologies, Low Carbon Transition, Subsurface Energy Engineering, and Power Systems Engineering. In their final year, students undertake major research projects and team-based capstone design projects, providing hands-on experience and real-world application of their knowledge.

Graduates of the programme can anticipate exciting career opportunities as energy systems engineers, energy transition consultants, subsurface energy engineers, energy researchers, and academics. Their expertise will be instrumental in driving innovation, advancing renewable energy technologies, and shaping the future of the energy sector both locally and globally.

Curtin Malaysia’s Bachelor of Engineering in Energy Engineering (Honours) programme represents a significant step towards fostering sustainability and innovation in the energy sector. With its emphasis on technology, multidisciplinary approach, and global perspective, the programme equips graduates to lead the charge towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
