The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) recently spearheaded a pivotal event in Legazpi City, underscoring its commitment to nurturing innovation and talent in the digital creative industry. Intending to empower both established professionals and budding enthusiasts, the game development industry roadshow served as a platform for knowledge exchange, skill enhancement, and community building.

Rachel Ann Grabador, officer-in-charge of DICT in Bicol, kicked off the event by highlighting the critical role of the creative economy in driving economic growth and job creation. She stressed the remarkable strides made by the Philippine creative industry, which has emerged as a key contributor to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), generating billions in revenue and providing employment opportunities to millions.

However, Grabador also acknowledged the need for concerted efforts to expand the pool of local talents and create a conducive environment for the digital creative industry to thrive further.

Partnering with industry stakeholders such as the Game Developers Association of the Philippines and Developers Connect, the roadshow featured an array of workshops, talks, and interactive sessions led by seasoned game developers and IT experts. Attendees had the opportunity to delve into various facets of game development, from coding and programming to animation and quality assurance. These sessions not only imparted practical skills but also offered invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of the digital creative industry.

Among the participants were 500 senior high school and college students, eager to explore career opportunities in the dynamic world of game development. Technology students at Bicol University College of Science, found the roadshow particularly enriching. The event provided a comprehensive overview of 2D animation techniques and emphasised the importance of quality assurance in ensuring the success of game development projects. Others appreciated the holistic approach of the workshops, which broadened their understanding of the tech industry and its myriad possibilities.

Beyond its immediate impact on participants, the roadshow was part of a broader initiative by the DICT to empower and promote the digital creative industry across the country. This initiative encompasses talent attraction, marketing and promotion, and research efforts aimed at sustaining the industry’s competitiveness and fostering its growth.

Legazpi City, chosen as the venue for the event, is one of the 25 priority areas identified under the Digital Cities 2025 programme – a strategic initiative aimed at driving inclusive growth in the countryside and positioning it as a hub for IT and business process management by 2025.

Leading the charge in digital skills development, the DICT is dedicated to providing free training through initiatives like the Digital Jobs PH (DJPH) programme, which aims to equip both unemployed individuals and online workers with essential digital skills. Ibrahim B. Guiapar Jr., Regional Director of DICT, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to this endeavour, highlighting the inclusivity of the programme by stating, “DICT is providing training for free”.

Tailored training modules in fields such as social media marketing and software development are offered under the Digital Jobs PH programme, with a focus on addressing the specific needs of each province.

The game development industry roadshow in Legazpi City stands as a testament to the DICT’s unwavering commitment to fostering innovation and talent in the digital creative industry. By providing a platform for learning, collaboration, and networking, the event not only equips participants with essential skills but also inspires them to pursue careers in this rapidly evolving field.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like these play a crucial role in shaping the future of the creative economy and driving sustainable growth and development across the country.
