Malaysia: Advancements in Internet Connectivity and Cybersecurity

In the pursuit of digital advancement and inclusive growth, Malaysia is steadfastly working towards enhancing its internet connectivity infrastructure. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recently announced significant progress in internet coverage, particularly in Negeri Sembilan, one of the country’s states.

According to Bukhari Yahya, the MCMC State Coordination Division head, internet coverage in populated areas of Negeri Sembilan reached an impressive 98.35% during the first quarter of this year. This remarkable achievement underscores Malaysia’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that citizens across the nation have access to reliable and high-speed internet connectivity.

The substantial progress in internet coverage is attributed to the ongoing implementation of the National Digital Connectivity Plan (Jendela) project. As part of this initiative, an additional 27 towers have been completed, further bolstering internet infrastructure in the state. Of these towers, eleven are already operational, with the remainder slated for completion by the end of the year.

Furthermore, efforts to enhance the 5G network in Negeri Sembilan are well underway, with 225 out of 233 sites prepared for operation, with a particular focus on the Seremban and Port Dickson districts.

Addressing cybersecurity concerns is also a top priority for Malaysia as it advances its digital infrastructure. Bukhari highlighted the collaborative efforts between MCMC and various authorities to tackle cybersecurity threats and cybercrime issues effectively. Initiatives such as MCMC’s Klik Dengan Bijak (KDB) and Malaysia ICT Volunteer (MIV) aim to educate the public on internet security best practices and foster healthy online behaviour. These initiatives play a crucial role in raising awareness and empowering citizens to navigate the digital landscape safely and securely.

Moreover, Malaysia is actively promoting digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness among its citizens. At an Advocacy and Outreach programme for Orang Asli villages in Negeri Sembilan, several briefings were conducted on cybersecurity, online entrepreneurship, and online ethics.

The programme, attended by 200 Orang Asli villagers, provided valuable insights into lodging complaints regarding telecommunications coverage quality. By empowering communities with knowledge and resources, Malaysia aims to ensure that all citizens can fully participate in the digital economy.

In a parallel development, the Johor government has allocated over RM1.9 million for the deployment of Premium Maju Johor broadband (WiFi) facilities across the state. These facilities, set to be installed in 63 hotspots across 23 locations, aim to provide high-speed internet access to education institutions, government hospitals, and public areas. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to digital infrastructure and opportunities for all segments of society.

Aznan Tamin, Johor Education and Information Committee Chairman highlighted the importance of providing high-speed internet access to educational institutions. The initiative, which includes education colleges and government hospitals, aims to enhance learning experiences and facilitate access to telemedicine services. By investing in broadband infrastructure, Johor is positioning itself as a hub for digital innovation and economic growth.

Furthermore, Cybersecurity Malaysia chairman, General (R) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, addressed the rising concerns surrounding online fraud and scams. He highlighted the alarming number of reported cases and stressed the need for proactive measures to combat cyber threats effectively. In response, Cybersecurity Malaysia initiated the National Anti-Scam Tour Programme (JASK), aimed at raising awareness of fraud risks and empowering citizens with the knowledge to protect themselves online.

The launch of the JASK 2024 programme reflects Malaysia’s holistic approach towards cybersecurity. By collaborating with government agencies, private organisations, and industry players, Malaysia aims to strengthen its cybersecurity ecosystem and safeguard citizens from digital threats. These initiatives underscore Malaysia’s commitment to accelerating its digital transformation and building a resilient and inclusive digital society for all.
