Resorts World Sentosa’s S.E.A. Aquarium and the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), have embarked on a pioneering research collaboration aimed at bolstering climate resilience through a fusion of research projects and educational initiatives. The partnership, symbolised by an unprecedented underwater signing ceremony, signifies a groundbreaking endeavour to address the pressing global challenge of climate change.

Assistant Professor Kyle Morgan from NTU Singapore and Abel Yeo from S.E.A. Aquarium’s Education, Research & Conservation team, submerged into the depths of S.E.A. Aquarium’s Shipwreck Habitat to formally sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underwater. This historic event underscores the shared commitment of both institutions to harness their collective expertise and resources in confronting the climate crisis.

The collaboration seeks to amalgamate the scientific prowess of S.E.A. Aquarium and EOS, NTU’s leading research institute focused on natural hazards and climate research, to pioneer innovative solutions for climate resilience. NTU Assistant Professor Kyle Morgan highlighted the significance of collective action in combatting climate change, emphasising the collaboration’s potential to drive meaningful change towards a more sustainable future.

Nicholas Derbyshire, Director of the Visitor Experience at S.E.A. Aquarium, stressed sustainability as a core value ingrained within Resorts World Sentosa’s ethos. Leveraging the expertise of EOS, he expressed optimism about the collaboration’s capacity to address pressing climate issues effectively, marking a pivotal step forward for both institutions.

The partnership will serve as a platform to showcase EOS marine science research on coral reefs, mangroves, and climate change, aiming to engage visitors in appreciating the diverse ecosystems of Singapore’s blue spaces and Southeast Asia. S.E.A. Aquarium’s Rainbow Reef will double as a teaching facility for NTU students and a testing ground for field equipment, while also hosting sensors to monitor sea temperature and levels.

Visitors can anticipate a myriad of educational opportunities, including ocean webinars and educational videos developed by EOS for integration into S.E.A. Aquarium’s programmes and exhibitions. This collaboration builds upon RWS’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, evidenced by recent initiatives such as the Children’s Biodiversity Library launch and funding for the RWS-NUS Living Laboratory.

The partnership not only marks a significant stride in marine science and climate change research but also aligns with NTU’s overarching goal to address humanity’s grand challenges, including environmental sustainability, as outlined in its NTU 2025 strategic plan.

Singapore is fervently embracing sustainability and climate issues, recognising them as critical components across all facets of society. From government policies to corporate strategies and individual actions, Singapore is weaving sustainability into the fabric of its society. Initiatives such as the Green Plan 2030, which sets ambitious targets for areas like green buildings, sustainable mobility, and renewable energy, underscore Singapore’s commitment to a sustainable future.

Furthermore, efforts to promote environmental awareness, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance resilience to climate change are evident in various sectors, from urban planning and transportation to education and innovation. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of society, Singapore aims to create a greener, more resilient, and environmentally conscious community for generations to come.

OpenGov Asia reported that the Singapore Maritime Week 2024 marked significant progress in shaping the future of the maritime industry, highlighted by the Maritime International Advisory Panel’s (IAP) third annual meeting.

Minister Chee Hong Tat led talks on decarbonisation, digitalisation, and cybersecurity, underscoring Singapore’s commitment to global industry trends. Discussions focused on seizing opportunities amidst uncertainties, underscoring the green transition, technology use, and workforce upskilling, with Singapore playing a key role in initiatives like green financing and talent development.

earlier, industry leaders and financial luminaries witnessed the launch of Singapore’s Sustainable Finance Jobs Transformation Map (JTM), guided by Minister Alvin Tan. This initiative emphasises the urgency of preparing the workforce for opportunities in sustainable finance amidst global economic shifts driven by climate change, with innovative financing approaches needed to align growth with climate objectives
