Singapore’s Digital Transformation in Education

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In response to suggestions for Learning Mother Tongue through Games, the Ministry of Education (MOE) of Singapore announced significant strides in leveraging technology to enrich students’ Mother Tongue Language (MTL) learning experiences in the upcoming 2024 Primary MTL curriculum.

The revised curriculum embraces a digital transformation, integrating a suite of interactive resources accessible through the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS). These resources encompass animated videos, online games, and e-books, designed to engage students and instill a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning their MTL.

For instance, notable features like the Hanyu Pinyin Animation and Shen Bi Animation utilise storytelling elements to guide students through the complexities of Hanyu Pinyin and word recognition, making the learning process more interactive and captivating. Furthermore, the SLS offers tools like the text-to-speech feature, empowering students to embark on self-directed learning journeys and bolster their Chinese Language skills at their own pace and convenience.

The Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) partners with various community organisations to host activities outside the classroom, fostering students’ interest in Chinese Language. Recent events like World Book Day and Literature Under the April Sky promote Chinese literature reading habits, while upcoming events like the National Chinese Riddle Competition and Chinese Street Dance Competition aim to enhance language skills and cultural appreciation.

Recognising the pivotal role of parents in shaping their children’s attitudes towards language learning, MOE emphasises the importance of creating a supportive language-rich environment at home. Encouraging parents to actively engage their children in language-related activities and conversations, MOE underscores the significance of collaborative efforts between parents, schools, and the broader community in nurturing students’ love for their MTL.

Singapore is robustly embracing digital technology in education, leveraging innovative tools and platforms to enhance teaching and learning experiences for students across all levels. With a commitment to staying at the forefront of educational advancements, Singapore aims to harness the power of digital technology to equip its students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the digital age.

The “Transforming Education through Technology” Masterplan 2030 represents the Ministry of Education’s strategic initiative to harness the potential of technology in education. Building upon previous initiatives like the 2020 EdTech Plan and ICT Masterplans, this new framework is designed to equip schools with enhanced capabilities to leverage technology effectively in teaching and learning.

It acknowledges the evolving landscape shaped by the pandemic, recognising technology as a pivotal tool in facilitating learning in a post-COVID world. The overarching vision of the EdTech Masterplan 2030 is to enable technology-transformed learning, ensuring students are prepared to thrive in a technology-driven society.

The outcome goals of the EdTech Plan envision digitally empowered students, technologically adept teachers, intelligent schools, and a networked EdTech ecosystem within the education system. These goals are supported by strategic thrusts and key enablers. The strategic thrusts delineate how the Ministry of Education (MOE) will integrate technology extensively into teaching and learning, focusing on customisation of learning, development of digital literacy, empowerment of 21st-century competencies, and fostering a culture of collaboration.

Meanwhile, key enablers such as learning analytics and data, school infrastructure and processes, and the EdTech ecosystem are identified to facilitate the implementation of the EdTech Plan’s vision.

Singapore’s innovative approach to MTL education underscores its commitment to harnessing technology to enhance learning experiences, instil a passion for language acquisition, and empower students to thrive in a multicultural and multilingual society. Through continuous collaboration and innovation, Singapore aims to cultivate a generation of bilingual and bi-literate individuals equipped with the skills and knowledge to navigate an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
