5G and Beyond: Vietnam’s Infrastructure Transformation

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Vietnam is on the brink of a transformative journey, transitioning from traditional telecommunications infrastructure to a dynamic digital landscape poised to revolutionise industries and drive sustainable development. This ambitious shift comes as the country embraces digital innovation as a cornerstone of its economic growth strategy, indicating a new era of progress and prosperity.

As the world celebrated World Telecommunications Day, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications (MIC) Phan Tâm underscored the theme of ‘digital creativity for sustainable development.’ This theme serves as a rallying cry for Vietnam to harness the power of digital technology to address pressing global challenges while driving sustainable economic growth.

The transition towards digital innovation encompasses a wide spectrum of initiatives, including the shift from conventional communications infrastructure to advanced digital economy infrastructure. This evolution signifies Vietnam’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to propel its industries into the digital age.

Minister of Information and Communications, Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, outlined the vision for Vietnam’s digital future. He emphasised significant transitions from traditional IT applications to digital technology, automation to artificial intelligence, and finite information processing to leveraging infinite digital data to generate new value. These transformative shifts serve as both a guiding principle and a driving force for network operators as Vietnam embarks on its journey towards digital transformation.

One of the key initiatives driving Vietnam’s digital revolution is the deployment of 5G technology. The Ministry of Information and Communications has taken proactive steps by granting licenses for the establishment of 5G networks and terrestrial mobile information services. This strategic move paves the way for nationwide 5G deployment in 2024, laying the foundation for a robust digital infrastructure that will power Vietnam’s economic growth and societal advancement.

Looking ahead, Vietnam is positioning itself as a global leader in 6G technology. The establishment of a dedicated 6G Steering Committee underscores Vietnam’s commitment to driving technological innovation and staying at the forefront of global advancements. While the 6G network is still in the research and development stage, Vietnam aims to unveil this groundbreaking technology by 2028 or 2030, positioning itself as a frontrunner in the digital era.

Leading telecommunications companies like Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone are actively engaged in 6G research and development, signalling Vietnam’s commitment to global standards and technological excellence. Deputy Minister Phạm Đức Long stressed the importance of seizing opportunities in the burgeoning 6G industry, highlighting Vietnam’s determination to lead in the digital age.

The transition towards digital innovation holds immense promise for Vietnam’s sustainable development agenda. By harnessing the power of digital technology, Vietnam aims to address pressing global challenges such as climate change, hunger eradication, and bridging the digital divide. These advancements align with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals for 2030, positioning Vietnam as a key player in the global sustainability landscape.

Furthermore, digital innovation is expected to drive economic growth and foster job creation in Vietnam. The adoption of digital technology across industries will unlock new opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and productivity, driving competitiveness and ensuring sustainable growth in the digital era.

OpenGov Asia reported on Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s new work plan, which aims to chart Vietnam’s ambitious journey towards a comprehensive digital transformation. Slated to expedite digital initiatives throughout 2024, the plan facilitates substantial socio-economic progress and aligns with developmental objectives for 2021-2025.

Vietnam’s bold leap into digital innovation marks a pivotal moment in its development journey. By embracing digital technology, Vietnam aims to drive sustainable development, foster economic growth, and position itself as a global leader in the digital age. With a clear vision, strategic initiatives, and unwavering commitment, Vietnam is poised to realise its full potential and shape a brighter future for generations to come.
