Hong Kong: Boosting Advanced Manufacturing Innovation

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) has launched a significant initiative to bolster advanced manufacturing technology and innovation in the region. At the Advanced Manufacturing Strategic Partnership Signing Ceremony, HKSTP joined forces with 11 advanced manufacturing enterprises, marking a pivotal step towards driving new industrialisation in Hong Kong.

These enterprises will establish research and development (R&D) centres, operational bases, and production facilities within the Hong Kong Science Park and InnoParks, focusing on three strategic industries identified in the industrialisation blueprint.

The collaboration is a coordinated effort by the New Industrialisation Development Office under the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau and HKSTP. The signing ceremony featured notable attendees, including Professor Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry; Dr Ge Ming, Commissioner for Industry (Innovation and Technology); and Mr Albert Wong, CEO of HKSTP. Mr Oscar Wong, Head of Innofacturing at HKSTP, signed agreements with representatives from the partner enterprises.

Professor Sun Dong highlighted the significance of these enterprises choosing Hong Kong for their advanced manufacturing operations, viewing it as a strong endorsement of the city’s potential as an international innovation and technology hub. The event, themed around advanced manufacturing, is unprecedented in its scope.

The participating enterprises operate across diverse sectors such as biopharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, robotics and automation, semiconductor equipment, new energy vehicles, and green energy. Many of these sectors are making their debut in Hong Kong, with an anticipated total investment of HK$14 billion and the creation of over 2,200 job positions.

Over the past two years, Hong Kong has engaged with over 100 high-potential innovation and technology enterprises, including at least 20 leading firms, to establish or expand their presence in the city. The HKSAR Government’s target of attracting enterprises and investments, set out in the Chief Executive’s 2022 Policy Address, has been achieved three years ahead of schedule.

The government remains committed to promoting new industrialisation and fostering collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research sectors to further establish Hong Kong as a global innovation and technology hub.

The “Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint,” announced at the end of 2022, outlines strategic directions to enhance the I&T ecosystem and promote new industrialisation. This blueprint aims to promote upstream basic research, accelerate the transformation and commercialisation of midstream R&D outcomes, and support the development of downstream industries, thereby creating a robust I&T ecosystem.

The New Industrialisation Development Office, established earlier this year, focuses on an industry-oriented approach, supporting strategic enterprises, upgrading the manufacturing sector, and aiding start-ups.

HKSTP has cultivated a thriving I&T ecosystem with state-of-the-art infrastructure, a vast network of investors, industry experts, corporate partners, and world-class researchers. Currently, HKSTP supports 12 unicorns and more than 14,000 research talents. It also hosts over 1,800 tech ventures from 28 countries and regions, focusing on health tech, AI and robotics, fintech, and smart city technologies. HKSTP’s efforts are central to transforming Hong Kong into an international I&T hub.

Furthermore, HKSTP has consistently supported the development of the manufacturing sector through its three InnoParks, aligning with the government’s new industrialisation strategy. The InnoParks offer world-class facilities, such as the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) and Data Technology Hub (DT Hub) at Tseung Kwan O InnoPark. The Microelectronics Centre (MEC) at Yuen Long InnoPark is set to become operational in the second half of the year.

These initiatives reflect Hong Kong’s strategic commitment to fostering advanced manufacturing and innovation, positioning the city as a key player in the global technology landscape.
