Powering Tomorrow: UoW’s Innovation Hub for Clean Energy

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The University of Wollongong’s (UoW) Science Space is set to unveil a cutting-edge gallery focused on energy futures, following a substantial AU$2.5 million grant from the Australian Government. This initiative aims to create the Energy Futures Zone, an engaging, interactive hub designed to educate visitors about various sustainable energy generation methods and inspire future innovators.

The Energy Futures Zone will feature 25 newly designed, hands-on exhibits that highlight innovative technologies such as hydrogen, wind, solar, wave, and gravity energy. In addition to these new exhibits, nine of Science Space’s most popular existing exhibits will be renewed, ensuring a cohesive and modern experience for visitors.

This new gallery forms a crucial part of a broader AU$ 10 million initiative aimed at developing the skills and courses necessary for future energy industries. By engaging both young and old, the Energy Futures Zone aspires to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators who will spearhead sustainable energy solutions.

The exhibits will not only educate visitors about the importance and mechanics of energy generation but also spotlight potential careers in the growing field of energy futures. The Energy Futures Zone is scheduled to open in late 2025, marking a significant milestone for Science Space and its visitors.

The Director of Science Space highlighted the transformative impact of the Energy Futures Zone. He noted that this addition would be the most significant change for the centre in 35 years, emphasising its commitment to community engagement and education.

The Federal Member for Cunningham underscored the importance of educating the public on clean energy transformation and the skills required to achieve it. She stressed that engaging young Australians in the opportunities presented by a clean energy future is crucial for fostering the next generation of engineers, scientists, tradespeople, and the labour force.

The Minister stressed the importance of involving young Australians in the opportunities provided by a clean energy future, as it is essential for developing the next generation of local engineers, scientists, tradespeople, and the labour force. She expressed her anticipation for the new Energy Futures Zone at Science Space, which she believes will open visitors’ minds to the potential and significance of clean energy and inspire them to envision a future within the exciting clean energy industries.

For over three decades, UOW’s Science Space has been a beacon of inspiration and education, particularly for school-aged children. The centre has immersed more than 68,000 visitors annually in the wonders of STEM through its interactive exhibits, Science Theatre, and Planetarium. With a record-breaking 18,000 school students visiting in 2023 alone, Science Space is poised for an ambitious refresh to meet the evolving educational needs of the future.

UOW is committed to unlocking Australia’s renewable energy potential by supporting the community and local industries in creating sustainable jobs. In 2022, the Australian Government announced $10 million under its Priority Community Infrastructure Program to establish the Energy Future Skills Centre at UOW. This center will support the education, training, and engagement needs of the future workforce in partnership with local industry, community, and global partners.

The Energy Future Skills Centre aims to provide comprehensive support for the education, training, and engagement needs of the future workforce, fostering collaboration with local industry, community, and global partners. Through these initiatives, UOW continues to demonstrate its commitment to leading the charge in sustainable energy solutions and inspiring the innovators of tomorrow.
