PANDI Catalysing Internet Growth in Indonesia

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Indonesia Domain Name Management Agency (PANDI) is actively promoting the growth of .id internet domain names in Indonesia, identifying small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as the largest potential sector for increasing the number of domain registrations.

“The biggest potential lies in SMEs because the government is targeting 30 million SMEs,” said PANDI Chairman John Simanjuntak in Bali. John revealed that there are currently 1.1 million registered internet domain names in Indonesia. This figure has surged dramatically from the previous year’s 200,000 domains. In just the last two months, the number of .id domains increased significantly, with 200,000 new domains added, reflecting the growing number of internet users in the country.

Despite this growth, the number of domain users remains relatively low compared to Indonesia’s population of 270 million and its 170 million internet users. “We will strive to further increase the number of domain users,” he added.

To boost the number of .id domains, PANDI collaborates with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and several marketplaces. John outlined three main steps needed to achieve this target:

Raising Awareness and Socialisation: PANDI educates the public about the importance of using .id domains through various campaigns and socialisation efforts.

Internet Literacy and Understanding: Through training and workshops, PANDI helps the public understand how to create websites and use .id domains effectively.

Expanding Distribution Channels: PANDI aims to increase distribution channels by partnering with ICANN-accredited registrars.

PANDI acts as the .id registry delegated by the Internet Cooperation Association. In this role, PANDI serves as the primary manager of .id domains, while companies or organisations using these domains are known as registrants. The needs of these registrants are met by registrars, organisations, or companies accredited by the Internet Cooperation Association. Currently, Indonesia has 26 domain name registrars.

John also explained that, besides representing Indonesia’s identity, the .id domain is widely used in Web3 with around 12 million users. Web3 is the third-generation web technology based on blockchain and decentralised systems. Meanwhile, the current Web2 technology is dominated by global information technology giants.

Echoing John, Hario Kuntarto, Head of the Digital Economy Governance, Game, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Team at the Directorate of Informatics Application Governance, Ministry of Communication and Informatics, underlined digital literacy’s importance in increasing the number of domain names. “From the community segment, the use of technology and skills should be enhanced, and from the youth and industry segments, there should be encouragement to use technology appropriately,” he said.

Despite the positive growth of .id domain names, challenges remain. One of the biggest challenges is the public’s low awareness and understanding of the importance of having a .id domain. Additionally, competition with other global domains is another factor that needs attention.

Nevertheless, significant opportunities are on the horizon, especially with the increasing number of SMEs transitioning to the digital realm. The government and various related parties continue encouraging SMEs to leverage digital technology to enhance their competitiveness and expand their market reach.

With strategic steps taken by PANDI and support from various stakeholders, the growth of .id domain names in Indonesia is expected to continue, providing significant benefits for businesses and the broader community. “To reach that goal, I believe it’s crucial to strengthen collaboration with industry partners, enhance public awareness about the benefits of .id domains, and foster digital literacy among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By doing so, the government can unlock the full potential of .id domains, drive further internet growth, and contribute to the overall digital economy in Indonesia,” Hario clarifies.
