India’s Push Towards Digital and Green EV Tech

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

India’s latest initiatives showcase a strong commitment to embracing digital and innovative technologies as part of its push towards a greener future. The government’s dedication to advancing electric vehicle infrastructure highlights its efforts to integrate cutting-edge technology with environmental sustainability.

To boost the manufacturing and adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles across India, the Central Government introduced the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme in 2015. This initiative aims to lessen reliance on fossil fuels and tackle issues related to vehicular emissions.

The second phase of the FAME India Scheme, which commenced on April 1, 2019, is funded with a total budget of Rs. 11,500 crores (approximately US$ 1.4 billion) and extends over five years. Under FAME II, incentives are offered to consumers purchasing hybrid and electric vehicles.

Continuing its pledge to sustainability, the Indian government is significantly advancing its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs) through a major investment in EV charging infrastructure. As part of Phase II of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India scheme, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has allocated Rs. 800 crores (approximately US$ 96 million) to three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for the installation of 7,432 public EV charging stations (EVPCS). Additionally, the MHI has approved an extra Rs. 73.50 crores (around US$ 8.8 million) for the upgrade of 980 existing low-capacity EVPCS across the country.

This initiative is a key component of India’s broader strategy to support the transition to cleaner transportation solutions. Among the planned installations, 438 charging stations are designated for Madhya Pradesh, while 552 will be set up in Rajasthan. These upgrades are expected to enhance the efficiency of the country’s EV infrastructure and support the growing demand for electric vehicles.

The MHI is also driving several complementary schemes to bolster the adoption of electric mobility. The Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024, with a budget of ₹778 crores (about US$ 93 million), provides incentives for buyers of electric two-wheelers (e-2W) and three-wheelers (e-3W). The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for the Automobile and Auto Component Industry, which has a budget of ₹25,938 crores (approximately US$ 3.1 billion), encompasses various categories of electric vehicles, including e-buses and e-trucks.

Furthermore, the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (PLI-ACC) Battery Storage, with a ₹18,100 crores (around US$ 2.2 billion) allocation, aims to stimulate domestic battery production and reduce reliance on imports.

India is working to become a global leader in EV manufacturing by attracting international manufacturers and boosting local production. The government has introduced policies to make EVs more affordable, including a 5% GST on EVs and chargers, green license plates for battery-operated vehicles, and road tax waivers. These measures aim to lower the overall cost and enhance the accessibility of electric vehicles.

India’s proactive adoption of cutting-edge technology, exemplified by the e-mobility R&D roadmap, aims to forge a sustainable automotive sector that meets current needs while pioneering a greener future.

The roadmap outlines India’s strategies for leading in electric mobility, focusing on Energy Storage Cells, EV Aggregates, Materials and Recycling, and Charging and Refueling. It aims to guide technological advancements, set a global benchmark for sustainability, and highlight technology’s role in fostering environmental stewardship and resilient growth.

These initiatives reflect India’s robust commitment to advancing green technology and fostering a sustainable future. These developments underscore the government’s dedication to enhancing the nation’s electric vehicle infrastructure and supporting the transition towards a more sustainable transportation system. Through these efforts, India aims to set a global example in integrating cutting-edge technology with environmental sustainability.
