Exclusive! PSA Singapore’s Digital Leap in the Maritime and Logistics Ecosystem

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Singapore, a global maritime leader, is home to one of the busiest ports in the world, managed by PSA Singapore (PSA). The port’s success is underpinned by its extensive global connectivity and innovative solutions aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability. One such solution is OptETruck, a groundbreaking transport management system developed by PSA to address inefficiencies in Singapore’s haulage industry.

In an exclusive interview with Sriram Ramanujam, Vice President of Digital Products for Regional IT Southeast Asia at PSA Corporation Ltd, shared his insights on their digital transformation journey aimed at enhancing efficiency and improving their environmental impact. This groundbreaking initiative earned PSA Corporation the prestigious OpenGov Asia Recognition of Excellence 2024.

OptETruck emerged from PSA’s comprehensive data studies, which highlighted significant fragmentation within the local haulage sector. This fragmentation led to operational inefficiencies and substantial carbon emissions. Given that trucking accounts for 34% of the transportation sector’s carbon footprint, PSA recognised the urgent need to streamline operations and reduce environmental impact. OptETruck was thus conceived to transform the industry into a more sustainable and resilient supply chain ecosystem.

Sriram explains that OptETruck is designed as a cloud-native application integrated into PSA’s platform, providing API-enabled access for all users. This digital solution offers automated scheduling and asset pooling capabilities, significantly reducing empty truck trips.

“The system allocates jobs based on real-time data, optimising routes and minimising idle time,” he states. “This innovation has resulted in a 50% reduction in empty truck trips, translating to an annual decrease of approximately 10 million kilograms of CO2 emissions – the equivalent of planting 300,000 trees each year.”

The successful implementation of OptETruck has not only improved environmental outcomes but also enhanced the operational efficiency of Singapore’s container trucking community. Truck drivers benefit from more efficient workflows, reduced waiting times, and better job allocation, contributing to their overall well-being and productivity.

“The robust exchange of supply chain-related information facilitated by OptETruck has strengthened Singapore’s position as a well-connected and resilient logistics hub,” he clarifies.

Sriram believes that collaboration must not be overlooked. It brings diverse perspectives, fosters innovation, and enhances the overall effectiveness of efforts. By fostering collaboration with key stakeholders, including trade associations and chambers, PSA has built digital capabilities that align with the evolving needs of the digital economy.

“This collaboration has enabled small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to thrive in a rapidly digitising world,” says Sriram. “By leveraging shared resources and expertise, SMEs are better equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation.”

Sriram elaborates that its adaptability is ensured through ongoing collaboration with end-users and technology providers. This iterative process allows PSA to refine and enhance OptETruck, maintaining its relevance and efficacy.

The platform leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide a neutral, common platform for Singapore’s haulier community. This approach has set new standards in the logistics industry, demonstrating the transformative potential of digital solutions.

The success of OptETruck has positioned Singapore’s port and logistics services as more competitive and attractive on the global stage. It exemplifies PSA’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, reflecting Singapore’s broader ambition to be a smart nation.

The development and success of OptETruck are attributed to the dedicated efforts of a diverse team comprising product managers, designers, software engineers, and implementation specialists. Their collaborative approach and commitment to innovation have been instrumental in creating a robust and adaptable solution that sets new standards in the industry.

The team employs agile methodologies, emphasising extensive collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders. Their expertise and contributions have been instrumental in driving the project forward, ensuring its successful development and implementation.

Overcoming challenges such as managing multiple workflows and resistance to change required a commitment to learning and innovation.

By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, the OptETruck team has successfully created a solution that aligns with PSA’s goals and vision for innovation and sustainability.

PSA’s experience with OptETruck serves as a model for ports and logistics hubs worldwide, demonstrating how digital solutions can boost operational efficiency and sustainability. It envisions OptETruck as a constantly evolving platform that is adaptable to the dynamic needs of the logistics and transportation sectors.

The insights gained from its development and deployment underscore the critical importance of cooperation and change management in achieving widespread adoption of new technologies, offering valuable lessons for similar innovation projects.

In closing, Sriram emphasises that OptETruck is more than just a digital solution; it exemplifies PSA’s leadership in redefining port management for a sustainable future. As PSA seeks opportunities to expand OptETruck to its overseas terminals, the platform’s influence on the global logistics landscape is set to increase, further solidifying Singapore’s position as a leading maritime hub.
