This partnership is set to revolutionise agricultural management by addressing critical challenges such as emissions monitoring, pest management, and crop yield optimisation through the innovative use of space technology.

The MoU signifies a commitment from both SmartSat and the agribusiness company to employ advanced satellite technologies to tackle key issues in Australian agriculture. A primary focus of this collaboration is the application of satellite data to monitor and report emissions from the company’s feedlot, aiming to improve environmental management. This initiative will help enhance the sustainability of agricultural operations by providing accurate and real-time emissions data.

In addition to emissions monitoring, the partnership will target the management of weeds, pests, and diseases in Australian grain cropping systems. By utilising satellite technology, the collaboration aims to improve the efficiency of agricultural practices and mitigate the impact of these challenges on crop production.

Another significant aspect of the partnership is the development of innovative techniques using satellite data to boost both the quality and quantity of grape yields in the Australian viticulture sector, benefiting grape growers and winemakers across the country.

Professor Andy Koronios, CEO of SmartSat CRC, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, “We are thrilled to join forces with Australia’s leading agricultural services provider to harness the transformative power of space technologies for advancing food production and environmental protection. This partnership underscores the critical role of earth observation technology in addressing some of the most pressing challenges in agriculture. By combining space-based data with on-the-ground expertise, we aim to enhance environmental monitoring and foster sustainable agricultural practices throughout Australia.”

The Managing Director and CEO of the company expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to developing sustainable solutions for its clients and communities. By driving agricultural innovation, the company aims to offer forward-thinking solutions that boost resilience and profitability in a rapidly evolving sector. The collaboration with SmartSat CRC to explore satellite-enabled earth observation technologies is expected to bring significant advantages to Australian farmers and the wider agricultural industry.

The MoU was formalised at a ceremony that coincided with the Forum on Earth Observation for Agricultural Innovation. The forum attracted over 80 scholars, researchers, and industry professionals, reflecting global interest in advancing earth observation research. Key figures from both SmartSat and the agribusiness company officiated the event, highlighting the collaborative nature of the partnership.

The partnership builds on previous discussions between SmartSat and the company, including a visit by the Chair Professor of Materials Physics and Devices and Director of the RCNN to explore joint research initiatives and collaborative opportunities. These discussions laid the foundation for the MoU and the broader research agenda that will drive the Centre’s future activities.
