The significant strides made by India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) were highlighted by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia. With a focus on fostering a robust digital ecosystem, the initiatives announced aim to enhance connectivity, accessibility, and innovation across India.
Minister Scindia emphasised that the government is committed to ensuring that digital and infrastructural links are ubiquitous, enabling citizens to access essential services and opportunities. This vision reflects a broader goal of creating an inclusive environment for all, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
Under various initiatives funded by the Digital Bharat Nidhi, the DoT has successfully commissioned over 7,101 new 4G mobile towers, significantly increasing coverage in aspirational districts, border regions, and areas impacted by socio-political challenges. As a result, 2,618 of these towers have gone live since June 2024, expanding mobile connectivity to previously uncovered villages.
Additionally, 5G technology has proliferated, with coverage now available in 98% of districts across India. More than 450,000 5G Base Transceiver Stations have been installed, empowering citizens with high-speed internet and positioning India as a key player in the global digital landscape.
Furthermore, 100 5G labs are being established across various institutions, designed to facilitate research and capacity building in next-gen telecom technologies. This initiative aims to create innovative use cases across different sectors, bolstering India’s position as a technology leader.
As part of the vision for a developed India, the DoT has initiated several groundbreaking projects aimed at advancing telecommunications technologies. The Bharat 6G Vision, launched in March 2023, aims to position India at the forefront of global 6G development by 2030. The DoT has invited 111 project proposals to expedite research in this field, demonstrating its commitment to future-proofing the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.
Another standout initiative launched is the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (EPKMN) App. This innovative application allows users to plant trees in honour of their mothers, tracking their growth through regular updates. By merging environmental responsibility with digital engagement, the app exemplifies how technology can foster community involvement in sustainability.
To promote domestic manufacturing and enhance exports, the DoT has introduced the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, with an outlay of ₹12,195 crores (approximately US$ 147 million) over five years. This initiative has already attracted investments from 42 beneficiary companies, contributing significantly to the domestic economy.
Moreover, the DoT has launched a reimbursement scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in the telecom sector, easing financial burdens and encouraging startups to thrive in a competitive environment.
In a move to strengthen cybersecurity and regulatory frameworks, the government has enacted the Telecommunications Act, 2023 which modernises the regulatory landscape. This act replaces outdated laws and introduces measures for efficient spectrum management, national security, and public safety.
To further enhance cybersecurity, the DoT has developed a Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), facilitating real-time information sharing among stakeholders to prevent cybercrimes and financial fraud. This platform currently includes over 750 users, encompassing law enforcement and financial institutions.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has launched an initiative to enhance connectivity and digital literacy in rural areas, aiming to bridge the digital divide. By deploying high-speed broadband networks and providing training in digital skills, the program will empower residents to access essential services and educational resources.
Through these transformative initiatives, the Department of Telecommunications is not only enhancing India’s digital infrastructure but also preparing the nation for a digitally empowered future.
