The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has inaugurated the PolyU-Daya Bay Technology and Innovation Research Institute in Huizhou, marking the official launch of the new facility. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Huizhou Municipal People’s Government and the Huizhou Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering technological advancements and industry development.

The unveiling ceremony featured key representatives from PolyU and the Huizhou government. Notable attendees included PolyU’s Council Chairman, President, Deputy President, and other senior academic and administrative officials, alongside Huizhou Municipal Committee members and leadership from the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone.

During the ceremony, PolyU’s Council Chairman emphasised the efficiency of collaboration between PolyU, the Huizhou Municipal Government, and the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone. Since the signing of their agreement in May, infrastructure for office and incubation facilities was completed within four months, reflecting strong dedication to advancing technological innovation and research industrialisation for the region’s high-quality development.

PolyU’s President highlighted the Institute’s focus on sustainable development through green technologies. He noted that the new facility will foster collaboration between government, industry, and academia, serving as a platform for green energy innovations and advanced technologies. This partnership will also enhance scientific exchange between Hong Kong and Huizhou, promoting integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The Secretary of the Huizhou Municipal Committee described the Research Institute as essential to Huizhou’s strategy to strengthen its role within the Greater Bay Area. He emphasised that the Institute would pool high-quality resources, nurture top-tier talent, and create a first-class platform for research and development, boosting collaboration between academia and local industries.

During the event, four primary research areas of the Research Institute were outlined. The Director of the Research Institute and Chair Professor of Soft Materials and Devices at PolyU introduced plans for research into new materials and energy. The Associate Director of the Institute and Director of PolyU’s University Research Facility in Chemical and Environmental Analysis spoke on green chemistry and sustainable catalysis.

The ceremony highlighted the four key research areas of the Research Institute. Professor Zijian Zheng outlined its development plans and focus on new materials and energy, while Professor Ka-fu Yung discussed green chemistry and sustainable catalysis. Professor Minchen Wei covered spatial computing and imaging and Dr Ruan Haihui addressed green and smart manufacturing. These areas aim to upgrade existing industries and promote sustainability and technological self-reliance.

The ceremony also featured the signing of collaborative agreements with eight local enterprises, solidifying partnerships aimed at advancing technology transfer and real-world applications. This move is intended to support the acceleration of industrial transformation in the region.

The PolyU-Daya Bay Technology and Innovation Research Institute aspires to become a model of cross-regional collaboration by utilising Hong Kong’s advanced expertise to elevate Huizhou’s industrial capabilities. Drawing on the resources and policy support of the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone, the Institute aims to promote sustainable growth and the establishment of green and low-carbon systems. This initiative will drive technological advancements and support the transition to environmentally friendly practices, fostering a new generation of industrial clusters in key sectors such as petrochemical energy, new materials, and electronic information.

By bridging resources and knowledge from both regions, the Research Institute intends to support the high-quality development of Huizhou’s industrial landscape while enhancing technological self-reliance and innovation capacity. The collaboration will serve as a platform for the convergence of government, academia, and industry, creating new opportunities for research and development. In turn, this will enable the commercialisation of cutting-edge technologies and reinforce the region’s competitiveness in advanced industries.
