In a significant move to enhance educational practices and prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital world, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Calabarzon is introducing the 21st Century Learning Environment Model (21st CLEM) at Angelo L. Loyola Senior High School (ALLSHS) in Carmona City, Cavite.

Developed by the DOST Science Education Institute (SEI), the 21st CLEM aims to transform the learning environment by incorporating cutting-edge technology. Featuring a wide array of advanced tools, this initiative is designed to boost student engagement and support innovative teaching methods.

This is Cavite’s first implementation of the 21st CLEM, aimed at modernising classroom experiences with advanced technology. Various elements will support a dynamic and flexible learning environment, accommodating various teaching and learning methodologies.

The facility will feature robotics kits, 3D modelling and printing equipment, virtual and augmented reality systems, and interactive ICT tools. Additionally, customisable desks and ergonomic chairs will enhance classroom adaptability, catering to the diverse needs of both educators and students.

Josephine Feliciano, project leader from the DOST-Science Education Institute, explained the vision behind the 21st CLEM initiative. “This environment fosters collaborative teaching and learning, utilising immersive technologies to bridge the technological gap between educators and students,” Feliciano stated. The classroom aims to provide a rich, interactive educational experience that prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of the digital era.

The project’s total cost is estimated between PHP2 million to PHP3 million (approximately US$36,000 to US$54,000), with the local government unit (LGU) of Carmona City contributing 70% to 80% of the funding. The remaining budget will be provided by DOST. The 21st CLEM classroom will be inaugurated on October 14 during DOST-Calabarzon’s Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week, stressing the role of technological advancements in education.

This initiative aligns with the Department of Education (DepEd)’s broader goals to infuse 21st-century competencies into the K to 12 curriculum. DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones recently emphasised the importance of moving beyond traditional educational tools to address real-world challenges.

Briones highlighted the need to develop practical technologies that enhance everyday life and solve pressing problems. “The challenge for us now is to go beyond the robots that we are building. We need to build robots which will make life easier, will make our homes more livable, and will eliminate the opportunities for corruption in government.”

The 21st CLEM initiative reflects a growing trend of integrating digital advancements into educational frameworks. This model aims to support DepEd’s objectives by creating learning environments that promote the development of essential 21st-century skills. Schools already equipped with 21st CLEM classrooms include Lipa City National Science High School, Bolbok National High School, Pinagtongulan National High School, and San Celestino National High School.

These institutions have received comprehensive technology packages, including laptops, interactive projectors, smartboards, 3D printers, and smart televisions, all designed to enhance the educational experience.

The 21st CLEM initiative not only underscores the commitment to advancing education but also highlights the importance of collaboration between government agencies, local authorities, and educational institutions. This concerted effort to integrate technology into the classroom demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to education, one that is designed to meet the evolving needs of students and prepare them for the challenges of the future.

As the Philippines continues to grapple with the demands of a rapidly changing technological landscape, the integration of modern technology into education represents a crucial step toward preparing students for future success. By embracing digital tools and innovative learning environments, the country is setting a new standard for educational excellence and ensuring that students are well-equipped to navigate and thrive in an increasingly digital world.
