Malaysia’s Commitment to 5G and Tech Innovation

Malaysia is making significant strides in its 5G deployment, underscoring its commitment to advancing digital connectivity and technological innovation. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil recently reaffirmed the MADANI Government’s dedication to enhancing 5G coverage nationwide.

As of September 2024, the country has successfully established 7,191 5G sites, with notable deployments in Sabah (564 sites) and Sarawak (551 sites). This extensive infrastructure development has achieved 81.9% high-speed 5G internet coverage in populated areas, with ongoing efforts to further boost this figure, especially in Sabah (68.9%) and Sarawak (62.5%).

During the Malaysia Day 2024 celebrations in Kota Kinabalu, Minister Fahmi highlighted the government’s progress and commitment to improving digital connectivity. He expressed satisfaction with the achievements thus far and highlighted the role of advanced technology in enhancing the quality of life for Malaysians.

Malaysia’s commitment to expanding 5G infrastructure is a key element of its broader strategy to drive innovation, enhance connectivity, and foster economic growth. In Budget 2025, the government will prioritise telecommunications and the creative economy, focusing on improving internet access in educational institutions and supporting the creative sector through initiatives like FIMI.

At the same time, the country is set to launch a second 5G network aimed at boosting connectivity, ensuring affordability, and increasing competition among service providers, reinforcing Malaysia’s position in the digital era.

In addition to its 5G expansion, Malaysia is gearing up to showcase its technological prowess as it prepares to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced a range of 5G applications, including a pioneering autonomous bus initiative, which will be a key feature of Malaysia’s technological showcase.

The autonomous bus initiative exemplifies Malaysia’s dedication to integrating 5G technology with public transportation, showcasing one of 40 planned use cases for the technology. This collaborative project aims to revolutionise the public transportation experience by incorporating advanced 5G connectivity features such as in-vehicle 5G access, real-time remote vehicle monitoring, and journey log collection.

These technologies are currently being tested in proof-of-concept trials, with the buses covering 1,000 kilometres. The trials demonstrate the potential of 5G to enhance autonomous vehicle operations, improve safety, and provide a more connected user experience.

Minister Gobind emphasised that this initiative aligns with Malaysia’s broader vision of becoming a digital leader. By integrating 5G technology with autonomous vehicles, Malaysia is not only advancing its public transportation systems but also positioning itself as a key player in the global tech arena. The ongoing trials aim to showcase how 5G can improve operational efficiency, safety, and user experience in public transportation.

Moreover, the Malaysian government is actively exploring the deployment of private 5G networks across various sectors, including oil and gas, healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics. This strategic focus on diverse applications of 5G technology highlights Malaysia’s commitment to driving innovation and supporting various industries.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook also addressed the need for legislative updates to support the use of autonomous vehicles. He indicated that amendments to the Road Transport Act are being considered to facilitate vehicle digitalisation and align with international standards. This proactive approach ensures that Malaysia remains at the forefront of global technological trends and fosters an environment conducive to innovation.

As Malaysia continues to advance its 5G infrastructure and showcase its technological capabilities, the country’s commitment to digital transformation and innovation becomes increasingly evident.

The expansion of 5G coverage and the integration of cutting-edge technologies like autonomous buses reflect Malaysia’s determination to lead in the regional and global tech landscape. Through these efforts, Malaysia aims to enhance public services, drive economic growth, and solidify its position as a prominent hub for technological innovation.
