The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and an American multinational technology company have joined forces to create a joint research centre aimed at fostering talent and conducting collaborative research in the areas of culture, art technology and interactive media, with the ultimate goal of driving innovation.
PolyU and the tech company will establish the Joint Research Centre on Culture and Art Technology (CAT), which is the firm’s top global research centre collaborating with an educational institution to promote innovation in art, design, and media. The School of Design (SD) at PolyU will collaborate with the tech company to establish CAT, with the objective of making it a premier research centre in the field of culture and art technology.
CAT aims to leverage Hong Kong’s location within China’s Greater Bay Area (GBA), a region known for its vibrant art and creative activities, to become a leading global research hub for culture and art technology. The collaboration between academia and industry will combine the tech company’s strengths in technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and high-performance computing with PolyU’s expertise in cross-disciplinary research and education. This partnership seeks to drive creative innovation in the field of ArtTech, enabling impactful and creative research on art technology.
An agreement to create the centre was signed by the Vice President of Research and Innovation at PolyU and the Senior Director of the tech company’s AI Technology Center.
The Vice President of Research and Innovation at PolyU stated that the university is pleased to collaborate with the tech firm in the fields of ArtTech and the creative industry. The combination of PolyU’s strengths in design education and research excellence with the software firm’s artificial intelligence computing expertise is believed to create a significant positive impact in the near future through the synergy of academia and industry. The leading interdisciplinary research conducted at PolyU will be transformed into practical use for the creation of innovative solutions for the creative, art, and entertainment industries.
Meanwhile, the Senior Director of the tech firm’s AI Technology Center noted that the collaboration between the two for the establishment of the first joint research centre with a leading design school would be ground-breaking for art technology and creativity. The partnership is expected to drive cutting-edge research and enable the development of innovative solutions for the creative industry with the assistance of artificial intelligence.
According to the Centre Director of the new joint research centre, PolyU is committed to actively engaging with the community to produce industry-relevant research that is both timely and cutting-edge. With the help of the tech firm’s expertise in artificial intelligence, the joint research centre aims to provide a collaborative platform for art communities and culture groups in the Greater Bay Area to create new forms of art.
As part of this collaboration, the two will collaborate to organise a range of events aimed at engaging the community and facilitating knowledge sharing, innovation, and entrepreneurship. These events will include workshops, sharing sessions, art-tech exhibitions, and a hackathon in Asia.
The establishment of the new centre represents a significant milestone in the field of art technology and creative innovation.
