Preparing Indonesia’s Digital Workforce

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The three historical industrial revolutions, encompassing mechanisation, electrification, and automation, serve as significant milestones, signifying noteworthy strides in human socio-economic progress. In the present era, amid the fourth industrial revolution, “digital transformation” has emerged as a highly prevalent keyword among policymakers, the scientific community, and businesses. This is due to its profound impact on altering the fundamental socio-economic foundations.

Today, it’s widely acknowledged that the workforce plays a pivotal role in accelerating digital transformation within a country. Many nations have taken initiatives to equip their workforce with digital literacy skills, and Indonesia is no exception.

The Ministry of Communication and Information of Indonesia has collaborated with multiple stakeholders to prepare a competent and highly skilled Indonesian talent pool in the digital arena. The Ministry has partnered with the Institute of State Electricity Company Technology (ITPLN) as a concrete step to expedite national digital transformation.

ITPLN is an Indonesian higher education institution under the auspices of the Education and Welfare Foundation of PT. PLN (Persero). It was established to meet the demand for educated, skilled, and professional experts in the field of electrical power. The establishment of this institution aligns with the Indonesian government’s efforts to prepare for digital transformation.

Mira Tayyiba, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication and Information, has expressed a commitment to continued collaboration with various stakeholders, including cross-ministerial and educational institutions, the private sector, and educational institutions. This collaborative approach aims to meet Indonesia’s need for nine million digital talents.

“In the future, let us strengthen our collaboration to ensure the success of national programmes in the fields of communication and informatics and enhance the quality of human resource development and community service,” she stated.

Secretary-General Mira Tayyiba hopes that the Memorandum of Understanding on Synergy and Development in Implementing Various Programmes in Education, Communication, and Informatics will equip digital talents with technical and non-technical skills to enhance their proficiency and competence.

In addition to collaborating with various stakeholders, Mira mentioned that the Ministry of Communication and Information has established the Vision of Indonesia Digital 2045 document. This document outlines the strategy to achieve Indonesia’s digital goals by 2045, supporting Indonesia’s aim to become one of the world’s top five economies.

Mira explained that Indonesia is projected to be one of the top five economies in the world by 2045 by which point, Indonesia celebrates its 100th year of independence. It is projected to have a population of 309 million, achieve an economic growth rate of 5-6%, and reach a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of US$9.1 trillion. Moreover, Indonesia’s per capita income is anticipated to reach US$29,000. To realise this shared aspiration, Indonesia must build a competitive economy and boost national productivity that is internationally competitive.

“Our efforts to collaborate with the Institut Teknologi Perusahaan Listrik Negara are aligned with the future vision,” she concluded. Mira also elaborated that the high level of digital literacy and the continuous advancement of digital technology, as observed in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and India, provide clear evidence that harnessing digital technology is a pivotal step in boosting the national economy.

Therefore, Mira firmly believes that collaboration with educational institutions will play a vital role in expediting the digital transformation process and, as a result, will contribute significantly to the nation’s overall economic growth and development. This synergy between education and technology is seen as a national driving force for economic prosperity and technological advancement.
