Thailand Promotes Digital Economy and Society with Funding for Four Policy Frameworks

Four policy framework ideas in Thailand will be eligible for funding in the upcoming fiscal year (2023). Promotion of Digital Government, Digital Agriculture, Digital Talent Development, and Digital Innovation Promotion make up the fourth domain. More than five hundred proposals for financing have been made in these policy areas.

General Prawit Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister, agreed on the Digital Economy and Society Development Fund (DE Fund) in a meeting No. 1/2023. The DE Fund provides financial assistance and awards for R&D under the Digital Development for Economy and Society Act 2017, as explained by General Prawit during the meeting.

Phuchapong Nodthaisong, Secretary General of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission, added that the DE Fund Management Committee discussed and approved issues regarding working capital management. As was its implementation, a project to construct a massive online database of industrial readiness levels based on Industry 4.0 concepts was also considered. The fiscal year 2020 budget allowed for this project.

The committee also revised the grant contract and formed a team of technical specialists to assess projects quickly against the project’s conditions, criteria, and goals.

Previously, Thailand has been eager to advance in data gathering regulation, information policy, and strategic planning to promote the digital society and economy. A framework for government assistance with personal data protection is being designed and implemented in response to the law.

The act was discussed at a meeting with the designated committee charged with tracking the progress of the prior resolution’s execution, and it serves as an updated version of national policies and goals on digital growth for economy and society, 2018-2037 phase 2. They implemented a digital service account following regulation No. 1/2022 to support digital businesses in Thailand.

Thailand has recently encouraged businesses to use AI, which the country sees as a means to boost production and reduce reliance on human work. As a result of this project, new digital tools and solutions will be developed for usage in specific domains.

Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) head Nattapat Aikpol ensured the agency had systems to promote and assist any technology or solutions that may come out of this effort. The organisation can use the depa Digital Startup Fund model to help develop its ideas into a sustainable business.

Through the development of digital technology, Thailand’s goal was to help not just the digital economy but also the space economy. Space Digital: Driving Thailand towards the New Economy” was the subject of a recent seminar hosted by Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Board (NSTDA). The conference was organised as a part of a larger strategy to strengthen Thailand’s new space economy ecosystem.

Using the example of the advancement of digital technology, Puchaphong spoke at the event about the need to create a space economy ecosystem that encompasses the whole space industry value chain. He said that satellites, ground stations, educational hubs, and research and development centres are just some of the government’s investments in space activities.

To make Thailand a formidable competitor in the international space market, he stressed the importance of establishing a well-defined policy or direction to promote and support space operations or activities. A new economic sector, the “New Space Economy”, looks to the private sector to innovate for long-term financial gain from space-based endeavours.

According to Dr Pornpan Tannukit, Director of the National Space Affairs Division, NSC, the New Space Economy Ecosystem Development Programme was developed in response to the increased need for space-based businesses and activities, as well as the corresponding sectors brought about by the proliferation of space technology.

A preliminary strategy for fostering Thailand’s New Space Economy environment was presented during the session. Participants offered feedback on a comprehensive promotion plan that will serve as a basis for future efforts to promote Thailand’s space economy ecosystem.
