The Aerostructures Innovation Research (AIR) Hub’s AIR Pass initiative is playing a crucial role in fostering innovation and growth within the aerospace and aviation sectors. This programme is tailored to assist startup companies as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in advancing their aerospace and aviation projects. The AIR Pass programme offers a comprehensive package that includes expert technical guidance, prototyping resources, and financial support for a span of up to six months for successful applicants.

Currently, the AIR Pass programme is in its final round, having previously provided valuable support to various Australian aerospace endeavours. Notably, these efforts are aligned with the broader industry goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, a commitment that is driving significant technological advancements.

One notable outcome of the programme has been the successful development and demonstration of an Aircraft Electric Power System (EPS) in conjunction with a dedicated testbed infrastructure. A significant milestone was reached with the installation of the EPS onto the designated test stand infrastructure, followed by rigorous testing ahead of the prestigious 2023 Avalon Airshow—an event of significant import within the Australian aerospace calendar.

Through close collaboration, the AIR Hub’s experts have played a pivotal role in the rapid design, production, and delivery of the EPS test rig. This intensive development phase, spanning just four months, culminated in the lead-up to the Avalon Airshow. The successful delivery of the EPS and accompanying test infrastructure for commercial demonstration marked a significant achievement.

The Director of the AIR Hub highlighted the programme’s transformative impact on the industry’s journey toward achieving net-zero emissions and said that cooperative endeavours within the AIR Pass project have yielded a significant influence in bolstering the aviation industry’s progression toward achieving a future characterised by net-zero emissions.

This accomplishment was a pivotal moment for the involved enterprises, underscoring their commitment to collaborative innovation and their ability to deliver on ambitious technology roadmaps. As a result of this achievement and the technical advancements demonstrated, these companies were able to secure additional funding to further their technical and business objectives.

The Founder and CEO of one of the involved companies emphasised the vital role played by the AIR Pass programme in achieving this milestone. He said that effectively concluding the EPS test ahead of the airshow held strategic importance within our company’s developmental and commercial trajectory.

The backing from the AIR Pass programme played a pivotal role in this pursuit. The accomplishment necessitated a significant collaborative endeavour, and the partnership with the AIR Hub was instrumental in achieving a goal that would have otherwise posed notable challenges.

AIR Hub’s support has propelled these companies toward their goals and solidified their position as key contributors to Australia’s commitment to sustainable aviation practices. By expediting technological advancements, the AIR Pass programme has played an integral role in accelerating the pace of decarbonisation in the aviation sector.

The AIR Hub is proud of its role in driving these technological innovations and remains committed to supporting leading aviation enterprises through the final round of the AIR Pass initiative. As the program continues to foster collaboration and innovation, it is poised to leave a lasting impact on the future of aerospace and aviation.

The AIR Pass initiative stands as a beacon of collaborative ingenuity, driving the aerospace and aviation industries towards a future defined by sustainability and net-zero emissions. By nurturing startups and SMEs through technical expertise, prototyping resources, and financial support, the programme cements its role as a catalyst for innovative change.

As we witness the achievements and advancements facilitated by the AIR Pass project, the aerospace landscape evolves, promising a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future for aviation. The AIR Hub remains committed to fostering these transformative partnerships and is poised to continue its impactful journey in shaping the skies of tomorrow.
