Singapore Fostering Digital Synergy and Innovation

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Singapore’s enduring commitment as a co-organiser of the Smart China Expo (SCE) underscores the significance of this annual event, not only in promoting collaboration between Singapore and Chongqing but also in facilitating connections with partners and regions worldwide. This year marks Singapore’s sixth consecutive participation at SCE and its fourth year as a co-organiser, highlighting the nation’s unwavering dedication to fostering digital synergy and innovation.

According to Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information, the continued presence of Singaporean companies at SCE since its inception in 2018 is a testament to their enthusiasm for exploring opportunities in the thriving digital economies of Western China and Southeast Asia.

In 2023, he recalled, a diverse range of Singaporean companies spanning sectors such as smart cities, logistics, and training are actively participating in the event, demonstrating the nation’s broad expertise and interests in digital innovation.

Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Chongqing Big Data Development Bureau are jointly organising the China-Singapore International Digital Cooperation Forum and a series of matchmaking activities. These initiatives provide a fertile ground for businesses from both sides to interact, exchange ideas, and forge valuable partnerships.

Central to these collaborative efforts is the shared ambition to innovate together. Singapore, renowned as a leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) hub, and Chongqing, with its promising tech ecosystem, offer ample opportunities for knowledge exchange and mutual growth. A prime example of this collaborative spirit is the Joint Innovation and Development Fund (JIDF), a testament to the mutual commitment to creativity and progress.

Under the JIDF, innovative projects receive crucial support and resources to thrive. One remarkable project involves Outlast Technologies and Chongqing University, which are harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate and detect faults in lithium-ion battery modules. This groundbreaking innovation promises to enhance the efficiency and safety of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), aligning with SCE 2023’s focus on NEVs.

In line with this emphasis on sustainable mobility, Singapore and Chongqing are working together to shape a greener future. A notable initiative is EVCo, a joint venture between Singaporean and Chinese companies which offers a comprehensive suite of e-mobility services. These services include leasing and maintenance of NEVs, smart charging solutions, and financing options.

EVCo leverages a digital platform to capture an array of vehicle data, ranging from real-time location to battery conditions. With the assistance of AI, it provides recommendations such as optimal routes that incorporate charging needs or clients’ requirements for multiple destinations. With Chongqing’s strengths in automobile and battery manufacturing, the potential for future collaborations to further revolutionise the NEV sector is immense.

As SCE enters its sixth edition, the digital realm continues to witness exciting new developments. By combining their strengths and resources, Singapore and Chongqing are poised to harness emerging technologies, seize opportunities in the digital age, and drive sustainable growth.

The shared commitment to innovation and collaboration promises to build a prosperous future that benefits all. In this rapidly evolving digital landscape, Singapore’s pioneering role in fostering international cooperation is poised to yield fruitful results for years to come.

The significance of the digital partnership between Singapore and China for economic growth, technological advancement, global connectivity, and sustainable development is immense. By leveraging their respective strengths and collaborating effectively, both nations can successfully navigate the complexities of the digital age and emerge as global leaders in innovation and technology.
