To bolster the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government’s ambitious “1+3 Innovation and Technology Project,” The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has forged a memorandum of understanding focused on technology collaboration with two prominent tech companies.

The primary objective is to accelerate the transformation of PolyU’s promising tech research projects and catalyse the growth of tech innovation industries within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Dr. Chen Jie, a member of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee, and a delegation of key figures from the tech industry visited PolyU to engage in extensive discussions centred around tech-related topics, including the development of tech innovation platforms, talent cultivation, and tech transfer. This partnership signals a significant step forward in enhancing the tech landscape in the region.

The signing ceremony, held at the PolyU campus, marked the collaboration between PolyU, a Hong Kong-based management consulting services provider as well a domestic industrial investment institution. The aim is to facilitate the commercialisation of tech research outcomes, particularly those originating from the “from zero to one” approach.

The Executive Vice President of PolyU expressed that this collaboration leverages the strengths of all three parties in tech research, funding, markets, and project information. The goal is to expedite the conversion of PolyU’s tech research projects into tangible products and nurture sizable tech innovation industries within the Greater Bay Area.

The CEO of the management consulting services provider underscored the significance of this collaboration. With nearly thirty years of experience in the Hong Kong market, the provider is committed to the comprehensive development model of ‘investment + investment banking + wealth management.’

This collaboration leverages the innovation and technology policies of Hong Kong and PolyU’s vast reservoir of tech knowledge. Together, they aim to continue supporting the development of the tech innovation market in Hong Kong. Their collective efforts aspire to create an environment conducive to tech innovation and stimulate an active tech innovation market.

The Chairman of the domestic industrial investment institution highlighted the critical role of this partnership in advancing tech innovation within the Greater Bay Area. The Guangzhou Development Zone has consistently adhered to an innovation-driven development strategy, emphasising the promotion of technological innovation and industrial upgrading. PolyU, as a globally influential institution, is committed to technological innovation and talent cultivation, with its tech research results being at the forefront of the world.

The institution is deeply rooted in the Greater Bay Area and has been instrumental in promoting comprehensive integration between Hong Kong and other cities in the Greater Bay Area, particularly in tech innovation, education, finance, and other fields.

The primary objective of this tripartite collaboration is to expedite the implementation and industrialisation of PolyU’s advanced tech research outcomes within the Greater Bay Area, with a particular focus on the Guangzhou Development Zone. This contribution is expected to play a pivotal role in the high-quality development of the Greater Bay Area’s tech ecosystem.

The HKSAR government has established a substantial HK$10 billion “1+3 Innovation and Technology Project.” This initiative will provide matching funds to support tech-focused university research teams looking to transform their research outcomes into viable startups.

Th two partnering firms have formulated a fund plan that allocates HK$150 million for investments in PolyU’s tech research projects. These projects will be jointly recommended to the HKSAR government for funding support. Notably, PolyU is the first university in Hong Kong to forge such a significant partnership with the two companies in the tech sector.

Looking ahead, PolyU remains steadfast in its commitment to close collaboration with mainland China’s government and tech enterprises. The institution will actively participate in influential tech research projects and continue to facilitate technology transfer. Their ultimate goal is to contribute to Hong Kong’s development as a prominent international tech innovation hub.

Additionally, the Huangpu District delegation had the opportunity to explore PolyU’s state-of-the-art tech research facilities. This visit provided valuable insights into PolyU’s world-class tech research capabilities across various fields. It is through such collaborative efforts that the Greater Bay Area will witness the flourishing of tech innovation, further solidifying its position as a leading tech hub on the global stage.
