India Collaborates for EV Battery Recycling Tech

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The European Union (EU) and India have embarked on a groundbreaking journey towards sustainable innovation in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. Through the India-EU Trade & Technology Council (TTC), both entities have launched an Expression of Interest (EoI) aimed at fostering collaboration among startups specialising in Battery Recycling Technologies for EVs.

The matchmaking event, set to take place in June 2024, signifies a concerted effort to promote cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange in clean and green technologies. With a vision to enhance the circularity of rare materials and facilitate the transition towards carbon neutrality, the initiative holds significant promise for both India and the EU.

At the heart of this initiative lies a commitment to nurture innovation and forge stronger economic ties between the EU and India. The EoI for the matchmaking event provides a unique platform for startups and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) from both regions to showcase their innovative solutions in EV Battery Recycling Technologies. With twelve innovators set to be selected for pitching opportunities, the event aims to identify, support, and promote advancements in battery recycling technologies.

The programme offers several benefits, including validation of solutions for the Indian market, the opportunity to pitch to stakeholders in the Battery Recycling Ecosystem, and matchmaking with solution adopters, influencers, policymakers, and potential clients. Six startups will be selected for the matchmaking event, with three of them receiving financial support to visit Electric Vehicle battery recycling facilities in India. Additionally, participants gain access and insights into the broader EV landscape of India.

The event underscores a broader commitment to promoting sustainability and fostering a culture of innovation in the clean energy sector. By facilitating cooperation and exploring potential trade and investment avenues, the initiative aims to drive the development of advanced battery recycling techniques focused on waste minimisation and resource sustainability.

Professor Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in driving industry expansion. “Our objective is to harmonise efforts with EU innovators to jointly develop battery recycling solutions that drive industry expansion. We are dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment where sustainability and innovation form the cornerstone of a flourishing circular economy,” Professor Sood remarked.

Mr Marc Lemaître, Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, highlighted the significance of collaboration in the EV Battery Recycling industry. “The match-making event is a step ahead to unlock innovative possibilities leading to a green and circular economy. We encourage innovators from the EU to seize this opportunity and explore potential collaborations with their Indian counterparts,” Mr Lemaître stated.

Startups and SMEs from India and the EU are invited to submit their Expressions of Interest (EoI) by 30th April 2024. The India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) serves as a key forum to deepen the strategic partnership on trade and technology between the two partners. Established in February 2023, the TTC aims to address challenges at the nexus of trade, trusted technology, and security while fostering cooperation in these fields.

Through its Working Groups, the TTC is actively working towards advancing identified objectives and key actions. The matchmaking event launched under Working Group 2 on Green and Clean Energy Technologies is a testament to the commitment of both India and the EU towards accelerating sustainable innovation and fostering economic growth.

As the world transitions towards a cleaner and greener future, initiatives like the EU-India startup collaboration on EV Battery Recycling Technologies stand as shining examples of international cooperation and shared commitment towards sustainability and innovation.
