The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU), and MTR Academy have established a strategic partnership to advance technological innovation in railway systems across Belt and Road countries. The institutions signed a cooperation agreement launching the Belt and Road Advanced Professional Development Programme in Railway Transport, which focuses on developing talent and promoting technological exchange by integrating academic knowledge with industry experience.

The inaugural programme, “Sustainable Rail Transport: Planning, Operations, and New Technologies”, launching in October 2024, aims to equip around 30 senior executives, researchers, and transport advocates with advanced expertise in railway technology. The curriculum focuses on the latest in smart mobility, integrated transportation systems, and sustainable rail operations, offering participants practical insights into emerging technologies shaping the future of transportation.

The two-week programme will take place in both Beijing and Hong Kong and will include lectures, workshops and site visits to state-of-the-art railway facilities. This structure is designed to provide participants with a deep understanding of the latest technological trends, enabling them to apply these innovations in real-world contexts. Through interactive workshops and discussion forums, participants will explore the potential of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data analytics in optimising railway operations and enhancing service efficiency.

A significant focus of the programme is on sustainable development through technology. Participants will examine the role of AI and IoT in predictive maintenance, where sensors and real-time data analytics monitor railway infrastructure health, preemptively identifying issues before they escalate into costly repairs.

The programme will also explore the application of big data in optimising train schedules, reducing energy consumption, and improving overall operational efficiency. These technological innovations are crucial for promoting the long-term sustainability of rail transport systems, particularly in rapidly developing regions along the Belt and Road.

The collaboration also emphasises the importance of smart mobility solutions, which integrate various modes of transport into a seamless network. Participants will study case studies on deploying smart ticketing systems, autonomous train operations, and real-time passenger information systems, all of which contribute to enhancing the passenger experience and operational efficiency. These technologies are increasingly critical as urbanisation accelerates in Belt and Road countries, necessitating the development of more efficient, reliable, and user-friendly public transport systems.

The partnership, set to last three years, will launch at least one training programme annually. The signing ceremony in Beijing brought together leaders from the three institutions: Professor HC Man, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at PolyU; Professor Meng Lingyun, Dean of the School of Traffic and Transportation at BJTU; and Dr Mark Ho, Dean of MTR Academy. Each emphasised their commitment to advancing railway technology and supporting the broader goals of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Professor HC Man highlighted PolyU’s leadership in smart railway technology, noting that the university’s innovations are already implemented in various regions. He noted the programme’s potential to translate research into practical solutions for sustainable transport infrastructure in Belt and Road countries.

Professor Meng Lingyun stressed BJTU’s focus on transportation technology and its role in national strategic initiatives. He noted that the programme would provide a platform for international exchange, fostering global collaboration through the sharing of advanced railway technologies.

Dr Mark Ho highlighted the collaboration’s blend of academic and practical experience, ensuring participants gain a well-rounded understanding of railway technology. This integrated approach is vital for sustainable mass transit development and smart city growth in the region.

Looking forward, the institutions plan to explore additional avenues for long-term cooperation, focusing on advancing railway technology to meet the evolving needs of Belt and Road countries.
