The MiniJet thruster stands out for its impressive size-to-performance ratio. Slightly larger than an AA battery, it features an innovative design with intricate lattice structures made from a unique copper alloy. This design greatly enhances thermal efficiency, allowing the thruster to function effectively in space.

The advanced materials enable the MiniJet to support extended missions, facilitate higher orbits for small satellites, and even return to Earth, helping to address the issue of space debris

Traditionally, small satellites have been confined to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) due to limitations in propulsion systems. The MiniJet overcomes these constraints with its compact and efficient propulsion capabilities. It reduces costs compared to existing solutions while promoting environmental sustainability. By improving satellite manoeuvrability and lifespan, the MiniJet enables more ambitious missions and supports compliance with emerging space debris regulations.

This breakthrough is particularly significant as it positions Australia at the forefront of space technology innovation. The MiniJet is poised to be a key component of Australia’s first lunar mission propulsion system, reflecting its potential to revolutionise space exploration.

In addition to the MiniJet, the Curtinnovation Awards recognised several other technological innovations across various fields:

Edison Collab: This AI-powered tool transforms how workshop feedback and discussions are captured and reported. By automating the creation of PowerPoint presentations and reports, Edison Collab streamlines the process for facilitators, saving time and enhancing productivity. Its use of artificial intelligence simplifies the extraction and presentation of key information, enabling workshop leaders to focus on more strategic tasks.

CeSL: An AI chatbot designed to foster self-regulated learning among university students. CeSL distinguishes itself with its integration of advanced natural language processing and self-determination theory, providing tailored support while reducing administrative workload. The chatbot helps students navigate university systems and develop independent learning skills, addressing a critical need for efficient and effective student support.

ChemoDX: This diagnostic tool employs advanced transcriptomics and AI to predict responses to platinum-based chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. By analysing tumour biopsies to identify predictive biomarkers, ChemoDX facilitates more tailored and effective treatment plans. This innovation represents a major step forward in personalised cancer care, helping clinicians better manage treatments and improve patient outcomes.

SMAAT: The Speech Movement and Acoustic Analysis Tracking (SMAAT) software application supports speech pathologists by combining facial landmark detection with acoustic analysis. It evaluates speech movements and accuracy against clinical criteria, offering a high degree of precision in diagnosing speech sound disorders. SMAAT’s ability to benchmark speech performance against established norms helps clinicians select appropriate interventions and track progress over time.

Moombaki Noongar Cultural Virtual Quest: This educational VR experience combines virtual reality with Noongar cultural teachings. It offers a comprehensive curriculum and a variety of learning resources, including a mobile game and immersive VR experiences. By integrating cultural education with modern technology, Moombaki enhances cultural knowledge and self-esteem among Aboriginal students, providing a unique and engaging learning platform.

Maintenance Schedule Optimiser: This advanced engine is designed for asset-intensive industries, especially mining. It automates maintenance scheduling using sophisticated algorithms to reduce downtime and boost productivity. By efficiently handling large schedules and cutting downtime by up to 25%, it has the potential to revolutionise maintenance practices in heavy industries.

These innovations collectively highlight the dynamic nature of technological advancements and their transformative impact across various domains. The MiniJet thruster, alongside these other groundbreaking technologies, illustrates the significant strides being made in improving efficiency, sustainability, and functionality across multiple sectors.
